Did anyone go 225/50/17?

Hello people,

Due to poor roads and need for comfort Im considering
going up from 45 to 50 on the sidewall fot the 17 in setup.
I know its not listed in the official recommendation so if anyone tried it
were there any problems with rubbing etc?

If its not feasible anyone have experience with more compliant tyres
which could make the car a bit more comfortable.

And, not I don't have RFT tyre since I know it would be my first thought
in case I got them with the car.

245-45-17 with General Altimax RT 45s, square set up, good smooth ride and good handling, good price. I went this way and not looking back. Went with 15mm spacer in the back. All 4 fits the wheel well nice with no rub. I was wanting a more comfortable ride and got it with this set up/and tires. I RUN 33psi all 4. Generally the biggest factor in ride is the tire and side wall height—— the side wall height difference between a 225 50 17 and a 245 45 17 is 3/16”.

I agree on the on the wall hight, this makes a lot of difference.
Was also considering 235/45/17 with a 4% difference in sidewall and some
more thread on the ground. Either way I will report back if/when a change is made.

225/50 x 17 might work OK.

My car is an E86 and is fitted with coil-overs so lower than standard, but I fitted 255/45 x 18 tyres instead of 255/40 on the rear and didn't get any rubbing. Mind you I didn't really notice any improvement in ride quality.

But they filled the arches well and made the speedo pretty much spot on accurate!

I misstated the spacers in the back are 5mm. I tried 15 mm but got a little rub on some bumps, 5mm doesn’t do much, so the 245 45 17s are perfect—-without spacers. The Generals altimax rt 45 are a high rated tire for ride and comfort and low noise, very close to Michelins but better price. Also they have good grip and handling is excellent

@Fyreball, Generals are probably better priced in the states. Here in Europe, at least where I live
they are hard to source and when you find them the price is more or less the same as
the Michelins PS.

@Mr Tidy, I agree that not all sidewalls are the same stiffness so also depends on the
sidewall construction and its loading index probably.

Once you’re at 40 profile it’s pretty much the end of the benefits..maybe Bridgestone Duellers?

Well just go with 245 45s that are available and having the highest ride/comfort ratings that you can afford. (Maybe Pirelli’s Cinturato P7)
