Diagnostic

Ive been looking at diagnostic code readers online.. do the £30/£40 cheap obes actually work? Or is there another cost efficient way of doing it?

Generic are exactly that. Will give you basic engine info, noting more.

Get the cable and software from somewhere like http://www.bcables.com/

The Konnwei KW808 was recommended on this site by others that have used it. Brought one myself, as you say around £30 but havent yet had to use it. Looks impressive if that counts.

OBD ii dongle and a phone app should do the trick. Can read and clear errors on my car easily, reset a work colleagues eml on his citron today.

Most cost effective way costs £2,20 (yes....really)
ebay obd2 bluetooth dongle (£2,20 shipped)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ELM327-OBD2-II-Bluetooth-Auto-Car-OBD2-Diagnostic-Interface-Scanner-Tool-EA-/262740146913

Free android torque lite app.

Reads all generic obd2 engine codes and live data. resets codes. Easy to use.
Does no programming, airbag reset or enhanced brand specific obd2
If you want to use that to the full extend and possibilities of the car, you can only use BMW INPA/DIS/PROGMAN/ISTA.
Be aware for a very very steep learing curve
