Diagnostic Fault Code Reader?

Hi folks,

I'm potentially looking into getting a diagnostic code reader.

Any recommendations on one that just reads, and any you can do a bit more?

Ease of use, price etc.

Are they a useful prevtative tool so you can sort things before they possibly show any symptoms or actually fully fail?

Any to avoid? :(

Thanks a lot.

You'll prob receive a lot of replies extolling the virtues of different readers. However, I'm a big fan of the Carly app which needs either a cable for Android or a wifi dongle for iOS.
Been using it for a while after using a basic reader and it's great. Can also do live parameters for monitoring on-the-go and gives you the ability to do some coding on various things too.

+1 on the Carly, and handy to always have it with you, the E85/E86 does required a wired adaptor though, and won't work with the bluetooth one.

I keep the wifi dongle in the car at all times just in case.
Interesting to watch live parameters such as oil & engine temps changing in real time when out and about....

I have laptop with INPA, ncsexpert, DIS v57, SSSv32, navcoder which is great for all coding and diagnostics, but recently bought the Carly wifi adapter which is great for most coding and clearing faults.

I bought one a few weeks ago and it is very nice.

However, i cannot seem to get the live parameters working. Have you been successful? If so, would you mind sharing the set up?

Thanks

Yeah, it's a bit flaky imo, but with a bit of perseverance and correct setup u can make it work.

Engine needs to be running with Carly wifi dongle or cable in OBD port.
Open up Carly app and wait to establish a connection. (I use 'normal' connection speed)
Go to 'live parameters' page and choose which parameters u want to see reported 'live'. they don't all work on an E85 and i think i only chose engine temp, rpm, speed but there are others which i didn't try yet.
U may need to reconnect first couple of times but make sure you do all this while stationary ofc
