DFP Filter

Hi don't know if anybody can help but my 18 year old son has just brought a 2006 X3 2.0d, reading reviews the DFP is a common problem, is there any way you can tell if it's been removed as he will rely on me to pay for the repair if it goes wrong ?

DPF / diesel particulate filter - serves no useful purpose to the car other than getting it into a lower tax band
If over regular oil changes have been done & the car is to be used like a diesel should then id not flap about it
Worry about the timing chain instead :wink:

My own take on the whole scene is DPFs clog up if not run as a diesel car was intended / ie decent runs each time getting car hot covering at least 20miles at 60/70mph
Problems start when folks buy the car's for town , city , shopping & school run's when they clog they can cause overheating which in turn can cause issues (heat ) for the timing chain which on the 2.0d BMW is at rear of engine therefore = big bill .
Change oil frequently , make sure it does decent runs & should warning lights appear or car limpmodes then have the DPF delete done , or do it as a precaution anyways ?

I was led to believe DPF needs 15-20 mins continuous running at 2-2500rpms reqularly to generate enough heat about 350c to keep clean , which will need to be in 5th with a six speed box to keep speed legal ish .

1st of all do not remove it , that will be an MOT failure if it was built with one.
Lots of DPF issues are caused by too many short journeys not allowing the car to get warm enough to regen. Also faulty thermostats not allowing that 75 degree C to be reached can burn out glow plugs whilst also clogging the dpf. BMW are helpful there removing the temp gauge on some diesels. There is a hidden menu if that is the case to check it. Google that and check it now!!!
I sold a 150k 535d on the original dpf and my wifes x5 30sd now on 149k and same dpf. I dont tend to drive with economy in mind so maybe that helps
