Detailing Question - lubricant for clay

My clay's finally arrived - well its in the deliverly depot (I missed the del today :cry: )

I'll be giving the zed its first ever clay experience tomorrow. But what lube do you use for clayig. I've read most will use quick detailer but also read you can use diluted car shampoo in spray bottle as well. Is this right? Obviously the latter is alot cheaper...

p.s. I'm sure I'll be asking how to apply paste wax next :oops:
 
quick detailer is the only way i have done it- at 30 quid for a set of meguiers clay and detailer it would be mad to risk ur paint in any other way imho. Good luck- pics of the results remember
 
I got me some Dodo Juice Born Slippy... designed specifically as a clay lube and smells yummy :)
 
Yep, a mix of shampoo and water does the trick and I believe Bilt Hamber clay requires just water.

Personally I use Sonus green clay with Meguiars Quik Detailer, as it smells nice. Just do it in the shade and you should have no problems.

As I'm skint, I went slightly cheepskate and ordered Gross It mild clay bar and PoorBoys Quick detailer. Hope they work ok. Will try and get a photo but I forgot my camera at work last week and I'm now on hol this week :oops: , so my iphone pics will have to do
 
got 3 megs clay kit from halfords when they had the 3 for 2 on cleaning products... worked out at £16.66 each.

Each kit contains 2x50g claybars, bottle of QD, microfiber cloth and a small sample bottle of wax. I think that's a deal and a half there! :thumbsup:

Still need to actually get on and use it though. :oops:
 
Peddy! That deal was a while ago :rofl:

That does sound like a good deal though! Shame I didn't think of that when halfords had it.

They almost always have that deal, so should be back soon.
 
Aye, I'm sure Halford will see the sun, put two and two together ad start the sale on for washing/camping/cycling stuff.

Might get more shampoos and detailer next time!
 
I'd skip the shampoo mix and go with the QD...expense really shouldn't be a question when it comes to saving yourself the paint damage...

The whole intent of the clay bar is to get into the most minute details of the surface...why bother skipping the one bottle of detailer you'll need to get the job done right?

Don't cut corners get the right stuff or you be so very sorry in the end. :cry: :!: then if you do it right the first time you be a happy camper behind the wheel :driving: and the ladies will give you the :wink: for all your hard work :)
 
Go to the Roadfly forum sites. They have both a E85 forum and a detailing forum. You might want to use the search function to check old threads as the forum has lost some of the original freshness and enthusiasm of new owners going back to 2003.
 
I've never had a problem using a water spray with a few drops of car shampoo in it, using it with sonus green or Megs Quik Clay. I initially (years ago) bought the Megs pack including the quick detailer, but when that was finished just used a water/shampoo mix. Several years and much claying later I've had no issues with it...

Was in my local Halford @ lunchtime and they had the 3 for 2 offer on all car cleaning products :thumbsup:

Just got my gear today! Would have given it a go tomorrow, but its Englad match. I'll have to do it before my holiday finishes!
 
Competing clays require the use of special lubricants. Bilt-Hamber Laboratories auto-clay differs
as its formulation enables normal tap water to provide the necessary lubrication. Some clay bars
contain surfactants such as powdered detergents or soaps. Long-term use of surfactants can
have adverse effects on paint systems - auto-clay contains no surfactants detergents soaps or
other soluble materials
Before using auto-clay thoroughly wash your car to remove any loose dirt. Direct sunlight should
not fall on your car’s surface, and it’s best if the work area is relatively cool, but not cold.
To use the clay bar spray water with a plant mister on a small area of your car and rub the bar
back and forth with light pressure. Auto-clay should glide across your paint keep the paint surface
wetted thoroughly. Auto-clay must not be used dry. Listen carefully - at first you will hear the bar
as it pulls the particles away from the paint, the noise and friction will disappear quickly.
After a few passes with the ClayBar, rub your fingers over the area to feel if the surface
contamination was removed. Keep rubbing until all contamination is gone. Finally, wipe the clay
residue off with a soft terrycloth towel, Just like waxing, work in small areas.
What you will see coming off of the car and depositing itself on the clay bar is a reddish brownish
residue, this is what you want to see. As the clay bar becomes soiled, simply fold it over squash it
out and keep going. Under no circumstances should the clay bar be used if dropped on the
ground, inside or out! The clay bar that comes in this pack is good for about 4 or 5 cleans on
the average sized car. Once the paint is clean wax immediately.

I've already got Gloss It Mild Clay (it was cheaper then most) so might give Blit-Humber a go once its finished - I see autotrader is recommending it as well.

Might have to do this in the garage then, as our driveway gets light all day long (better then the garden :thumbsdown: ). Hmm, that makes me wonder if I should abandon the idea of garage conversion :wink:
