Dealing with Boy Racers

Over the past two weeks I've had the following idiots trying to goad me into driving too fast....

VW Golf GTD
KIA Ceed GT Tech
Vauxhall Astra SRI something or other.
Skoda Octavia Estate
Vovlo Estate unknown engine size

All 2013 / 2014 plates. Usually just pull in and let them past although I have to confess....

Accelerated away from them within the speed limits then let them catch up before pulling away again.

Guy in the Kia was especially angry that my car had better acceleration and the Vauxhall guy was very annoyed and laughed at by his mate in the passenger seat.

How do you normally deal with these people?

Please don't give boy racers a bad name, you seem to be talking about people with absolutely no love of the automobile.
As always drive within yours and your cars ability, out accelerating people and then slowing at the speed limit will wind a lot of people up the wrong way especially if they want to overtake you because they might not be able to do it when you are up to speed.
If you are having a lot of trouble, you may want to evaluate how you are driving, are you doing anything to draw this attension?

No it's not the case that I'm slowing down at speed or doing anything to attract attention.

Pulling over into the inside lane on the motorway at 70 and then get some idiot up behind me very close. Let the car slow down naturally without braking to 60 - 65 and give them ample opportunity to overtake. Still no overtake and still on the bumper. Pull away from them to a safe distance then have them back on the bumper again after they've accelerated quickly to catch up with the car.

Maybe you would have to be there to get it!

I'll try and get video the next time on the GoPro.

Smoke 'em, drive it like you stole it and out racer them  :driving:

...though that list is hardly prestigious, so maybe just let them past, or ignore them :D

Ive never had that and ive had some nutters mess with me, just try and ignore and keep plenty of distance between you and the car in front. Good luck and don't let them get you down.

The gap is keep everyone as safe as possible, you don't want to have to react to the car in front doing something silly. The closer somebody gets to my rear bumper, the bigger the gap i leave in front of me.

Stops you rear ending them too, in the event you're hit from behind. Sage advice, I do this too though usually on higher speed roads.

You clearly drive on very quite roads then. I generally find that the more of a gap I leave the more idiots that want to pull right in to it. I could leave the '2 second' gap and then some idiot decides there's a space for me and in the go, usually without indication and chucking up all the sh!t of the day whilst they are at it. It's especially annoying on the motorways with the 'keep two chevrons apart' and there is always one who thinks that gap is for them!

Unfortunately not much you can do re these tailgaters. I have put the rear fogs on or slightly covered the brake, that usually works otherwise just slow down enough to 55ish and they'll soon get fed up and overtake. I've driven a few makes of car in my time and it's always the BMs that attract the idiots to the rear bumper especially when there is two lanes and nada in he outside one. It's especially annoying in The Z'd as they clearly don't realise just how close they are to he back of your seat they are.

I usually leave them to it, It almost ended very badly for me once when I (genuinely) tried to get away from some boy racers being knobs around me at the lights.. Police suggested I knew them and was racing, I didn't and wasn't, they lied in their statement to make it look like I was fast and the furious style street racing, all disproved by their own onboard cameras, but was an extremely stressful 20 months. Can't even think about how bad it would have been if I was actually doing wrong so I tend to save it to the track unless we're out in the country and give it a brief blat.

Can't lie, occasionally I will bite. Espeically in the supra, having a 7 grand supra accelerate after, catch up to and over take a 40 grand 360 did make me chuckle. As did leaving more than a few 911 owners in the dust.. Usually back off once the points proven and before the speeds get silly..

Normally I just let them past and get on their way.

Last week I felt the need to smoke some idiot in an A5 that that was driving up my boot for about 2 miles then pulled along side when we reached some traffic lights.

It was quite satisfying watching him in the rear view mirror pull back in to my lane.

Missus wasn't too happy with me though :o

One thing I've noticed about the Zed is that it winds up folk in very average cars, especially people carriers. More performance orientated stuff seems reasonably respectful on the whole. The MINI attracts far more tailgating idiots but in a year of ownership, I've only had one numpty try it on with the M135i. He looked very silly by the time we'd finished.

Listen to you grumpy old men :poke:

Boy racers don't tend to buy brand new cars. Think what you have been having trouble with is what you would call wankers.....

And they arn't driving bmw's or audi's, what a strange world :P

I tend to think that this could possibly be the most effective accessory when dealing with tailgaters, boy races etc.

Just let them past and then <BANG> they won't be doing that again

I cant say i have had issues with boy racers i feel they appreciate a powerfull car, they might try race away from the lights but generally give up after a short time ,its men forced to drive people carriers or average saloons who tend to act like knobs and try to provoke a reaction .i dont even acknowledgment them except i might glance back at there grumpy faces in the mirror

I get this all the time. Was driving the Scooby yesterday and some asshole in an old merc screamed away at the lights, you should've seen the smoke! He surely has a small winky.

Best thing I find, if you can see them eyeballing the car, rev it like mad, while gripping the wheel white knuckle style, hunch forward then pull off oh so gently while they thrash their motor away from the lights. Works every time and still amuses me. :D
