dealer nav upgrade - success (eventually)

i've posted a couple of times on upgrading OS of my prof nav system on M roadster, have the 08-2 Nav DVD and v26.

tried the download route - iso images all failed ...

so went to nearest (not favoured dealer) to ask them.... might have well been speaking swahili (sp?) they sent me to speak to some newbie Mini service advisor ... made my excuses and left. BMW if your asking "dealer of the year"

so called up my country located dealer who i regulalrly get 5 serviced at - speoke to parts guys was great - honest about what he didn't know - gave me name of ket techy guy. spoke to him and after a we bit of to'ing anf fro'ing reckoned he understood and so got booked in. Thye quoted 50 minutes labout plus VAT.

Well today all went well and it was done neat and clean..... latest version, perspectve mode and postcode search stuff... works great - worth it alone for perpsective mode - so much easier to read/follow.

50 minutes ... How far away do you live from me ... I would have done it for a tenth of that and still made a profit...

ah but... the ambience, the three expressos, nice pastry, the beautiful toilets...the overheads I'm contributing too.....and a while away from the office and chance to think (sophisticated thoughts) without interuptions.... sort of down time - worth the money.

I like your thinking. You did not mention the receptionists. Not worth mentioning? :D

Is this why you didnt my you M at my local dealer then, nothing to do with the price I bet. :D

What do you mean by 'postcode stuff'? Is this the 5 or 7 digit postcode search.
If it's 7 is on the front screen or part of the POI?

Thanks

50 minutes
While these guys serve good coffee that is close to comical. The software upgrades in less than 5 mins and they do nothing other than slot it in and come back in 5 Mins.

Have to agree though the perspective is way cooler than 'flat'

Stay out of my negotiations please ... I was dealing with the mug, sorry, client first :D

bear in mind they had never had customer come in and ask for this so in that respect compared to the dealer with mini service advisor (WTF?) I'd rather they took the time and made it work rather than balls-ing it up....

time is money and internet blind alleys were a loss leader...

so my advice ... sure try the internet leads or cadge a copy of somebody close or take a few mins on phone with your dependable dealer and sort out what is needed and enjoy a caffine injection while somebody else gets it done and if they feck it up they put it right - otherwise you could end up a tw@t on your drive with buggered Nav....on balance....

Well I make your 1/10th of the 50 minutes as the same as mine so have merely confirmed what a great deal you offer :poke:

Still physprof has a good point that if you're in any way struggling or concerned with this upgrade stuff leave it to the guys that know what they are doing (well fix it when they get it wrong)

Thanks PVR.

You can get 7 but when available you have to dive into the Points of Interest to use it. (A pain but useful if you were desperate I guess)
That now answers my question that is has to be a modified map disc. Cheers.

Could you explain in a bit more detail please. I thought you could only get 5.

You can only get 5 on the OEM BMW map DVD. However, there are (illegal) copies around that have added 7 digit post code as Point of Interest on the map.

You can buy this "modified" map from various sources on eBay, however note that a) it is an illegal copy and b) it is a pain to use

The instructions on how to use it are here:
http://tinyurl.com/5u8v8k (This is a pdf document)

All the UK postcodes have been listed as a point of interest. You search through the POI's like you might if you need a service station etc etc..
When you find the Postcode / POI you need you can select it as your final destination.

As I said before you will need a modified Map disc for this to work though.
