De-laminated wing mirror glass?!

Morning everyone, my left hand wing mirror has died overnight:

It seems as if the mirrored layer has hardened and peeled off, much like old paint does. Also has a slight bubbling texture to it too. The flaked and bubbled bits are brittle, you can see at the bottom where I poked it! Already in the process of sourcing a replacement lens (whilst I'm here, any recommendations?) but has anyone seen or heard of something like this before and what could have caused it? Last night the lens was perfectly fine. No frost or anything here over night, right hand mirror is perfectly fine still

Happens a lot. The adhesive ages and hardens.
Ebay plentiful supply or try Sopers if you want oem

I used 1mm sticky pads for fixing number plates on my wing mirror when it started to come free - was lucky to notice it.

Came with alcohol wipe to clean both surfaces - I just stuck mine on that rubber backing you see on your photo.

:driving:

I have the eBay ones on mine which are perfectly fine.

This seems to happen to 90% of Z4 owners, sometimes when driving!

Interesting/strange problem.
I know the mirrors (mirrorglass) can fall off, but I've never seen this.

expensive problem if you have auto dim mirrors :o

Snap!

I used the following company to order new glass http://www.incarshop.co.uk/acatalog/BMW_Z4_Door_Mirror_Glass_and_Wing_Mirror_Glass.html

Dealer wanted £80 plus vat so I thought Id try a glue on mirror first
