Day time running lights

I be been thinking about DRLs, the strip kind, fitted to automatically come on and off.
I have looked for threads on this and the general opinion was they look pants, but I can only find very old threads.
Here goes
Do they still look pants, considering all cars now seem to have them fitted?

It's a subjective thing I guess. To me, even some of the manufacturers' ones look pants, especially this craze for vertical ones.
But, particularly for grey and other dull colour cars which can merge with the background, they are a good idea.
Fitted discretely, not sticking out looking naff, they may be ok.
If it's for extra visibility rather than just looks though, you could run with your lights on?

I looked into this to be fitted inside the fog light lenses. As the DRLs are already weatherproof, you could hack away the back of the foglight to fit a strip unit in?
Otherwise, if you have the old bumper, I think there are neat round DRLs you can buy that also have the foglight within the ring. Like this:

Or this? I don't know the diameter of the pre-facelift openings.

You can code your standard lights in Carly to come on as daytime running lights....
Is there a thread on that, or do I visit a specialist?

There's a thread here somewhere called 'who has carly' or something similar. That may show someone near you who could help?

I swapped out the piss-poor halogen bulb in my angel eyes for LEDs (on a Z4M) and then turned the check-bulb warning off (caused flickering when off) and then turned them on permanently with ignition (in Carly - in 3 lines IIRC).

Have tried various drl's on the Z3 and Z4, the usual strip types have always failed after some time, the latest ones I fitted to the Z4 were a pack of 10 round light units here https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-10X-12V-Car-Motorcycle-LED-Eagle-Eye-DRL-Daytime-Running-Lights-Lamp/383254806844?hash=item593bc4413c:g:JgoAAOSweoRdw99D
I only mounted a pair of these in the lower front grill on the Z4 and they provide a bright eye catching light that is very visible to other road users. Wired back to the fuse box behind the glovebox and a sensing unit under the bonnet linked to the sidelight + wire so the drl's switch off when the sidelights are switched on. Sensing units also on ebay. Not got any pictures, will add one next time I venture out and add it to the post.

Here's a link to the thread about who has Carly and where they are:- https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=97818
