D Day 80

Have you been watching?

I thought that it’s all been very well done in a very tasteful and respectful manner.

It's really enjoyable and moving to Watch. The drones over Portsmouth last night were cracking.

I've just been watching the highlights of the days events on the 6 o'clock news....with tears in my eyes. The veterans being applauded and thanked as they walked, some in wheelchairs; through the streets and crowds in Arromanches. Very emotional.

The Arromanches bit was very significant for me as that is where my father was dropped of 80 years ago - he was only 5’4” and was told the water was only about 6” deep - he jumped in with full kit and it was chest high!

Just what you need early in the morning after an uncomfortable sea crossing.

One story got me when a elderly French lady buried 3,000 bottles of Champagne in her garden when the Germans invaded her village. She dug them up and drank them with the soldiers who drove the Germans out and has held a Champagne party every year since.

Caught it this afternoon, very moving and well done but really what a disgrace Sunak couldn't be bothered to turn up  I find that unbelievable.

The Arromanches ceremony?
Sunak and Starmer were both there but the emphasis was on the veterans. Even Charlie was in row 3

He attended the morning part with the Kings speech but then left and didn't attend the main afternoon event which I thought was just poor. Just amazing considering this Countries role on D-Day. At least Prince William was there.

Ah !
I hadn’t realised that there was an afternoon function as well but if he had gone home then it’s bad form in my opinion as well .

The afternoon I think was the main event with Macron hosting and presenting legion of honours to the veterans. Biden giving a speech etc which I thought was good but then it started to turn into a west vs Russia and dragging Ukrain in, Putin the tyrant etc which I felt wasn't really appropriate for the occasion. To me it started to sound like presidential campaigning. I get that he was trying to associate the tyranny of the past with today with Russia but that's for another time.

Ironic that the French Ports are now on strike this week. They didn’t turn us away 80 years ago !

Also ironic that whilst Macron was sat next to Sunak yesterday thanking the British for saving the French 80 years ago, a French Warship was escorting an immigrant boat away from France into British waters where they then left them to capsize and be rescued by the RNLI and taken in to Dover !

On the bright side of the passport stamp after the drop, a D Day + 80 passport stamp might very well be a collectors item in future years.

It’s not only him that’s been somewhat less than respectful, I well remember a PM of the day (Michael Foot) showing up at the Cenotaph in a green donkey jacket!
