Quite a few parts to remove to get to the thing and very fiddly but after 16 years it was required. All the plastic pipes were very brittle and fell apart when removing them and the rubber hose that drains oil back to the sump via dipstick was like sponge and just about blocked.
Some evil engineer at BMW decided that rather than have push on hose connector like the others on the most awkward to reach pipe it should have a twist and lock connector. However, after much head scratching and cursing I removed the solenoid and bracket (pictured) and this made it a lot easier. Whilst in there I noticed the oil filter housing was leaking so thats the next job.
