Custom OEM+ Exhaust

Finally...

A few spare minutes to quickly share some details on my new (improved!) exhaust set up.

With a long slog from MachineMonkey, and some (significant) time spent swapping them over - I now have my own custom built exhausts to my design, with MM improvements. The system is based on that of Exdos, and a few tweaks from chatting to various custom exhaust shops, googling and MM himself.

The aim:

Take a stock exhaust, make it more fitting to the style, performance and design of the car, and make a best effort improvement on air flow.

The method:

Using a spare OEM backbox set, remove all S-bend piping, replace with a perforated central box, and some plates for guiding airflow towards the exit.

The thought being Perforated pipe removes some of the resonance, preventing too much Rasp and Drone, but allowing a more direct path from inlet->outlet you improve airflow and therefore potentially power (when combined with other airflow based mods). The bonus, and one key thing for me, was improving the sound (personal taste). IMO the OEM BMW sound is pretty tame for such a high performance car, but most aftermarket systems seem to be OTT and pretty obviously aftermarket. I wanted to improve things, but only to the extent that joe-public wouldn't know it wasn't originally meant to make that sound. So - Lower, deeper gurgle at idle, no more drone/rasp than existing, and more volume at WOT and hopefully a potential performance increase.

The outcome:

Lower, deeper gurgle at idle, no more drone/rasp than existing, and more volume at WOT and hopefully a potential performance increase.

Evidently, i'm a happy bunny, and i owe MM a decent beer. The 1-2 hour refitting job probably worked out to be 4 hours in the end, thankfully i had some spare bolts/rings etc, and MM has a host of tools to make life easy (Angle grinder was required for old rusted bolts!).

Some videos - as expected they really don't show much - the extra depth and volume is barely noticeable on the video, but pretty evident when you start it, and people do seem to be more interested when i drive by at slow speed (read: interested, not angry :P )

I do have a warm start before-vid, but need to record the warm start after-vid before i put it up :)

What's it like to Drive?

Startup - +30% volume, deeper, more gurgle, similar to a PSE but maybe slightly less in your face. Same 'quantity' of rasp, but more aggressive when cold. :D
1600-2000 RPM - under load you have the usual slight drone in high gears, but motorway speeds no difference,
above 3500 RPM +20% volume
When warm - more depth, pops/bangs on overrun - (though i believe people claim this doesn't happen... pretty clearly does when this thing is hot - just not sure what is causing it!) Sounds epic. Also great fun with a bit of heel-toe b-road action :)

The observant will notice MM painted them black too - great choice in the end, no bollocks hanging from the back of my car now :)

Would i recommend? Yes! Will MM ever do them again? I doubt it - lol.

Next stop - Gruppe M.

Credits: Big thanks to Exdos, Dalecan, gwatson and of course MachineMonkey for the initial input, and the physical hard work.

Well done guys, glad this worked out! :) :) Mark1 was too raspy for my liking, but sounds like you've got a good solution there

Loving my Stromung exhaust though, oh and I have a Gruppe M on route

Would love to hear those in the flesh. Top work guys. I think I saw the innards of those boxes, a lot if thought has gone into it! You really need to undersell this stuff though because at the rate Mat is never going to get his on the road! ;-)

Yeah on his behalf i'm pretty much banning him from doing any work other than his own car until it's driving again :P

Hard to tell from the pics but the craftsmanship is top notch, with some thought the inner boxes could literally be sold as a drop-in component.

Anywho - i'm a happy chap, been driving it at every opportunity.

Wow thanks for the compliments first of all.

I am honestly really pleased you like them. I was gutted you where not happy with yours gwatson. But I hope there new owner is learnt a lot from doing yours. This method really is so much easier and obviously works better too.

Jimmy I am made up your so happy. I do make a bit extra for my hobby (the monkey machine) as I couldn't afford to run it let alone mod it otherwise. But mostly to help out and get stuff done that you guys on the forum would struggle with otherwise.

As for would I do another???? Well yes I would in the same conditions. Spare set of back boxes and no time pressures.

As for my car been working on it tonight guys. It's going well RTAB 1 done everything painted ready to start going back together. As for the work ban for others it's a bit late for that I have 3 sets of tips to finish tomorrow. And 2 quads to make. But don't worry mine will get done.

Back on track in the flesh it sounds amazing. And Jimmy's car has started my love for imola Z4MCs burning again!!
I still have first dibs on yours jimmy

Hey guys, great write up.

Exhausts are looking great too!

I need to adjust one of my rear back boxes as the last garage didn't quite line them up last time they were off. Is it easy to do yourself, or would I need a a garage to do it with ramp etc?

If you have axle stands a jack and the bolts are not badly corded its easy. If you have had them off recently (at a garage) I would think they will undo ok.

Jack car and make it safe. Spray with wd40 or similar and have a cup of tea.
Undo the bolts that connect the back box to the main exhaust.
Wriggle and position the exhaust.
Then tighten back up.

I would think its easier if you had someone else to say when it was in the right place.

We spent a lot of time trying to adjust position with the mounts - which basically has no movement in it at all, the key for us was to adjust by positioning before tightening the flange bolts.

Ok, so I only need to loosen the flange bolts, position then retighten? I don't need to worry about the other hangers/clamps?

I think mine just needs the tips to go up very slightly. The left to right is fine!

Does that rear under tray bit need to come off to get access?

Basically yes that's correct The hangers have no adjustment as long as they are tight.

The under tray i am not sure you could struggle but it comes off easily so i would just take it off.

Once the flange bolts a lose move to the correct position and tighten back up. Might be easier with 2 so one can check it and hold it while you tighten. I can imagine it getting very frustrating doing it alone.

Perfect, thanks mate

I think it's been good there for a few weeks, but I haven't been back for a while now! I live near London and am working offshore

Have fun down there.

Sorry to revive an old thread - jimmybell, where in SW London are you chap? I live in Balham and I'd like a little more noise from my OEM exhaust, so would buy you a beer at your local for a listen!

I'm the owner of the exhausts MM did for gwatson.
I don't mind the rasp as it quietens down a bit once the engine is warm :) nice deep rumble at idle and I like the MM tips!

I am tempted by the Stromungs though! oh and the eventuri intake....doh need to stop spending money.

I'm in Earlsfield, Jad. Moving in the next few weeks though, but i'll be still within ~2miles of Balham.

I think mine turned out less raspy than gwatson's, due to a slight design tweak. Would be interesting to hear them compared though!

Excellent, you're minutes away. Would you mind therefore? Perhaps a beer at the Castle and a run out?
