Custom exhaust

Hello all~
I’d like to tweak the exhaust note on the S54/E86. Not looking for loud and obnoxious, just want to turn up the sound a little, something a little more rumbly bumbly. What would be your suggestions for an exhaust system that will add just a little more voice to the car?

Merry Christmas to all.

Start with the back box sections. You could cut open and modify your backboxes or have a local fabrication shop make you a set of custom boxes so you can revert to standard as and when.

Here’s an example: https://www.powervalve.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=336

RPI seem to be a popular choice, although some find them a bit too much!

My car had Powerflow back-boxes fitted when I bought it and I'm very happy with them. A bit more volume and no droning above 2,000rpm which is easily avoided!

I’ve been messing around with a few different exhaust combinations and have settled on supersprint v1 stepped headers and s-pipes with cats, then stock x-pipe and back boxes. Granted, this isn’t a cheap option but looks stock, adds some grumble, zero drone and minimal rasp. Plus, you get a power boost.

I’d be interested in seeing a custom system that merged asap after the headers then kept a single pipe for as long as possible before splitting out to the rear mufflers. I’ve heard that merging the exhaust for a decent distance removes some of the less pleasant S54 sounds (ie pebbles in a tin can rasp). If I didn’t have headers that I want to keep, I would have given this a go.

Ive just the done the back box mod and I'm happy with the results.

It's noise is a little louder than standard driving normally but get heavy footed with it and it shouts a bit, but not really loud. Cost about £140-£150.

I had a custom exhaust built couple of years ago. It is a cat back valved system so you have full control. Initial setup was too loud for me from inside the cabin but amazing from outside. However it was becoming painful to drive with droning. So I did a full sound deadening which reduced noise inside the cabin but still was not good enough. Overkill then suggested a bigger box and it is almost at a good spot currently.

First box size a lot of droning : 8"x 5" oval box 12" long
second box size : 10" x 5" oval box 14" long

I do wish it was a tad bit quieter but overall happy with it.

"something about a gutted backbox for £150"

Can you share some pics/details please? I'm looking to do this but am struggling finding a garage that will either do the work at all or at a reasonable price. I've spoken to 4 places near me and all refused to do custom work.

If you can wield a grinder with a cutting disc yourself you can do this too.

Get it the lid part welded back on and then fitted to the car. A could of garages wouldn't even fit mine, but it best to find a small independent place.

Great. Thanks for that - looks easy enough. Although, with the inserts you put in on the last step, is that not just the same as putting in some straight pipe?

But they are flexy so you can get them over the stubs of the pipes that are left and I did drill holes in mine so some of the gases go into the fibreglass.
