That might be relevant to E89's. My manual, for my 2005 car, states this:

The section on connecting/jump starting states:

So, you can use either, even for jump starting. E85/E86's are obviously more robust than their lightweight cousins.... :)
 
"Disconnect earth first, reconnect last" has always been my motto.. I have seen SEVERAL muppets over the years short out spanners & sockets doing it the other way round when removing/refitting batteries etc - Not a pretty sight as it turns almost red in their hands..
