Cruise control retrofit

Hey there,
I have some questions about retrofitting cruise control on my 2006 Bmw Z4 2.5si.
1. Can I just plug in the stalk after I remove the panel under the steering wheel? Or do I need to do some wiring?
2. Can I get it to work after the install or do I need to get the coding done for it to work?

Hello and welcome!

You have a 2006 so the wiring will not be fitted. You will have to retrofit the cabling for it to work.

Not too sure about this, I would have thought it should work straight away but it probably won't (why would BMW make it easy) so keep in mind you'll probably need to code it.

It doesn’t need coding. You need to install the loom - try BMW or forum member srhutch who does a custom cruise control loom for very reasonable money. And you need to cut out the template from the lower cowl (it’s marked on the inside). Then it’s plug and play.

Good to know

I just checked out a video where they install the cruise control on a 2007 Z4 e85 and it seems to be harder than I thought. They had to cut some cables and connect wires to the cars main computer. Also run wires trough the dashboard. Seemed way harder than what I did when I installed a new radio in my car. I guess it's not different for the 2006 model. Might just leave it the way it is, because it's not the most annoying thing to deal with.

It’s not difficult, no cutting wires that I recall. The srhutch loom is tailored and fitting is simpler than the bmw one. It’s maybe an hour’s job and no particular competence is required apart from being able to follow instructions.

I did this job a month or so back. Srhutch ‘s loom and instructions were perfect and dead simple to follow - even for me 🤪 there is one cable goes through into the engine bay, but the instructions even told you what route to follow.
Just got to remember to use the cruise now !

I think you can still get the stalk from BMW but it's about £180 now. :o

But they do come up for sale now and again from breakers.

The good news is your 2003 car should have the wiring in place already.

Fyi I bought an e46 complete set of stalks for 30 quid off e bay in the summer.took off the cruise stalk fitted it plug and play in the z4 .works fine and I now have a spare wiper and indicator stalk should I ever need them .all I had to do was connect the waiting wiring plug slot the stalk on to the waiting peg then cut out the cowl to suit it .20 min job whole thing .

The wiring is there on mine a 2003 .Just a small black 4 pin plug tucked up under the cowl so literally plug and play

What wiring did you use was it e46 wiring, the loom on here (srhutch) or the genuine e85 wiring? Cheers
As neil12000 has a 2003 car, he didn’t need to install any loom. They were pre-wired up to around Sep 2004. It would be an epic pain to pull the loom out of another car (e.g. E46). The BMW one is a retrofit kit. The srhutch one is simpler and cheaper. Now you have >3 posts, you should be able to PM him.

The E46 doesn't have a stalk for cruise. It's on the steering wheel...
