Cracked Windscreen Advice

So earlier this week my windscreen cracked, I made a call to my insurance who put me through to Autoglass.
They were going to do the repair until I said I wanted BMW glass, now my insurers say they will not cover for OEM glass.

Has anyone had any experience with this at all? My insurers are Elephant.

Also how bad is non-OEM glass?

Thanks.

I thought it was more around using the BMW seals rather than necessarily the glass itself? Others have either managed to get Autoglass to supply the OEM seals or have bought it themselves for the fitter to use. I believe non OEM seals can be variable quality?

Thanks for the reply.

I'm unsure to be honest, this is the first windscreen I have ever had to replace so don't really know much on the subject, How would I go about getting Autoglass to get OEM seals and how would you know if they said they would but didn't?

I would buy a seal from BMW and get a non OEM glass fitted.

Don't let them use a rubbish seal otherwise you will have issues!

This is what i did and i have no issues

I've had Auto Windscreens replace mine and on two occasions they have supplied OEM seals without additional cost. The insurance company would
fit an OEM screen if you paid the difference in cost. At the time this was around £400, so a no-brainer really.

Need to replace my screen soon to since a rock truck dropped a rock and the company won't cough up for the repair. So the idea is a none OEM screen is fine but with OEM seals, will get on the case me thinks.

Is that your insurance co. or the rock lorry co. that won't cough up? I would have thought your own insurance would pay regardless, OK it will cost you the XS but without affecting your NCD, but still a lot cheaper than paying the full cost.

So little update, I have done what Ash said above, just ordered me a new seal was around £23 so will get them to fit that with the "Autoglass" glass.

On a side note, it makes you wonder how much Autoglass glass is worth, BMW glass was around £350 so include the seal and labour you're looking at around £400-450 say.

When I enquired about my insurers paying for OEM glass they wanted me to stump up £313.60... does that mean that my £75 excess is near on 50% of the total repair from Autoglass then? :|

Rock truck company, thought it was at least worth asking. As the old saying goes if you don't ask you don't get

Will stick it through my insurance once it is back from being repaired where the wife drove into it :headbang:
