Cracked wheel

Noticed I had a slow punture , took the rear wheel off for a quick inspection and there's a bloody crack in it , ellipsoid type , straight to the engineering firm AS McKay in Birkenhead who just happen to share a yard with a tyre firm and twenty mins and £35 later it's fixed !

If by "fixed" you mean welded I'm sorry to say that only weakens the alloy and it will be more likely to crack again. The only real fix is replacement.

Says the people who sell extremely expensive alloys

Welding weakens a wheel ? Yes it does if its not done properly. Do you know how many gas pipes are welded and hold several hundred bar pressure ?

What happens is that you may get another crack in the alloy at another place - The alloy itself may have an issue. If it had been made properly in the first place and made to stand the torque and vibrations generated....

I'm sure it will be fine , I've been around long enough to know my way around repairs , if you could see what we did to wheels when I raced stock cars most people on here would pass out
I'm sure replacement would be preferable but on a 6k car it's just not worth it , I've had them repaired before on other cars and never had a problem .

Hello from Korea. When it comes to e89 35 's wheels , they are notorious for cracking.

As an ex-head of club z4, I had more than 100 owners who replaced their wheels owing to cracks. (I myself get more than 8 exchanged. )

We took the issues to bmw korea and discussed the problem. They laid blame on the road conditions. It is shocking to know there are cases abroad. They came up with reinforced wheels which had less cracks.

I had 35s and 35is. My 35 is got totalled in 7 months that wheels on 35is didnt have a chance to crack. Instead my rib cartilege got cracked in the accident.

Wheel cracks still haunt the owners still.

Sorry I gotta go. Talk to you later.

I have a welded AC Schnitzer alloy on my track car E36 which regularly gets bounced off curbs, holds air nice and tight without issue.

As said above if its welded properly to start with it wont be an issue.

Ive seen badly repaired wheels with weld tacked over the split which is pretty shabby .
Also seen properly carried out repairs which involve a cut being ground into the split then welded up & if cleaned up & polished off professionally as good as any weld found elsewhere on a car .
In a ideal world no one chooses a repaired wheel but they are unlikely to explode ,shatter or perform any differently to a untouched wheel .
Far more dangerous imo driving with cheap tyres ,wrong pressures or worn tread
