Cracked Wheel...again (now with some good news)

Hi Guys,

Had my car in at BMW Sydney to have a new 'comfort access' key coded to the car, which is AUD1000 :o !!, and asked if they could check my wheels. Sure enough there is a crack on the inside back left. The wheel was only replaced 18months ago. On top of that there is a 'fold' in sidewall of the Perrelli run flat requiring a new AUD700 tyre! Just waiting to hear back from BMW HQ as to who is going to pay for the wheel (it won't be me!)

I love the car but as I've only got 3 week left under warranty so I'm nervous about dealing cracked wheels after then. We'll see what BMW comes back with and will let you know.

Sorry to hear that, you and the rest of us with 19" (esp 296) wheels live in a state of nervousness about this topic... Did the replacement wheel(s) have the new design?

(there's a post here showing old and new designs: http://e89.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=484812&page=4 )

Hey Manic,

I've actually sent photos of the new 296 design to my BMW rep as I have requested the wheel be replaced the new style ONLY. Will let you know how I go!

You will ge a new style one....have been told after warranty expires, they will look at cracked wheels sympathetically if the situ arose again....so lets see.

If it makes you feel better I have had 2 326 M Sports crack too.....

Same old story. My worry continue to be what happens if one of these crack and it is not noticed for a while and then fails catastrophically. Pity BMW don’t do the right thing and just recall these defective wheels. This (and the security fiasco) will certainly stop me buying another BMW and I have had 2 every year for a while.

I had one 326 crack. It was found while doing the security update. My warranty will expire in September and I am nervous about keeping the car on unless it's still covered. Is there any redesign of these wheels?

No redesign on the 326. Sorry but I'm relieved there is another cracked 326 M Sport wheel......was worried it was just my driving

dont say that, im getting paranoid one of my 326's is cracked now hence the other thread :o

I had 38000kms on my original 296's and did two things. First, I bought wheel and rim insurance so it didn't matter if they cracked, I wasn't paying. Either BMW or the BMW sold insurance but not me, secondly I threw away the runflats and put on real tires . This improved the ride immensely and reduced the stress on the rims ( and the driver). No cracks and a better ride....magic!

Good luck !

Well I certainly feel I'm a card carrying member of the 'Cracked 296 Club' now

The good news is that BMW has paid for the new rim with no questions asked. Even my service guy said 'and quite rightly so!" I've had a look and can confirm it's the new design..Yay!

One down, three to go.....

My next question was 'what will happen when my warranty runs out on February 22nd and I turn up on the 23rd with another cracked rim?' My service guy has assured my he will go 'into bat on my behalf' and that he has been successful in getting other cracked rims replaced well after warranty. Only time will tell.

It's summer here and a beautiful day today so I've decided to just drive and enjoy my Z and and try and forget about all this crap. I'll deal with cracked rims when it comes up (as I know it will) in the future. :driving:

Thanks for all your support!
