I purchased this 2004 Z4 a few months ago to be my new daily driver. I didn’t plan on getting this car, but I’m so happy I did.

I also have a first generation Miata that I autocross and do track days with as much as possible. I adore that car. I’ve always (since I could afford them) had fun cars as my daily drivers but they always had some sort of practicality and compromise... IE, Subaru STI, Fiesta ST, GTI, etc. They were all decent compromises but I was sick of driving a completely different platform for half the year as my Miata is locked away during the winter to protect it from the brutal salt covering the roads.

I realized there was no reason for me to be compromising. I don’t have children, and I mostly work from home... so why did I need the extra seats and space? My wife also mainly works from home and she has a Focus ST... which is super useful.

My epiphany led me to 3rd generation Miata’s. They’re less precious than the first gen’s and quite inexpensive. While searching this Z4 3.0i, 6spd manual, w/ sport and premium packages popped up in the same price range. I decided I’d check it out anticipating that I’d rule it out. Well, that didn’t happen. I loved it.

Here she is when I first brought her home:

I immediately purchased a set of 17” Kosei K1’s with new non-run flat summer tires in a square set up even though it was already almost winter. I justified it by using the stock wheels for my winter wheels, which are now running Falken Eurowinters.

I bought the car with a small dent right at the corner of the trunk lid that has bugged me especially since it’s one of my favorite parts of the car. I picked up a carbon fiber lip spoiler from eBay that hides it nicely.

Those black wheels look really nice, but the ellipsoid wheels on the first pic. are my favourite (favorite USA wrong spelling) :? for the Z4. Lovely car. :D You are 5 hours behind us where you live, so Happy New Year tomorrow at 0500.

Great intro. Welcome to the forum. Been out driving my son"s MK2 all afternoon. We love our MX5s. :driving:

Nice cars, looks like you've put a lot of work into the MX5, and are on the way to upgrading the Z4 now as well  .
Welcome to the forum

Thanks everyone! I thought I’d get notifications for responses, but I must have turned that off. This weekend I replaced the rear struts as one was starting to leak. It looks like the previous owner swapped the fronts. I also added the ECS strut mount reinforcements. I didn’t realize how bad the blown strut was until I drove it with the new Bilsteins.

The Z4 has mostly been handling the winter like a champ, though when it’s extra slippery the traction control is too aggressive and almost makes it undrivable even is DSC. I have a stop sign in the middle of a hill near my house and I almost got stuck. I decided to turn off the traction fully and was able to make it up fairly easily (I’m running winter tires of course). I think In the long term an actual LSD will make a world of difference.

I’m starting to research whether my best option would be to source an e46 rear subframe/dif/etc would be best, or just having one built by diffsonline.com would be best. I do want to change over to a 3.46 or 3.6X as well. Does anyone have an experience with adding an LSD?
