Couple of Problems - Need Advice

Hey gays and gals,

i have a couple issues on my 04 Zed that have been getting worse or just started happening and was looking for some advice. I have read many threads from here and other sites but each say something different.

1. I have noticed for awhile the car has got "Sticky Steering" and only notice it when i have been going in a straight line for a bit and then try to correct the steering. I have read this can be caused by a dry joint on the steering rack under steering wheel, a dry U joint or needs the the steering rack replacing.

Has anyone had this issue and how did they fix theirs?

2. My passenger door has been difficult to open from the exterior door handle, i tried to get to the handle last week but couldn't work out where to place the bent screw driver tool and pull the catch back and now it doesn't work at all from the outside handle when i haven't even done anything :cry:



3. My dad cleaned the leather seats while i was away on holiday with leather cleaner and now the airbag is on, i understand this is normally the passenger seat sensor.

Should i get it checked out or just buy a resetting tool?

1. It has happened to several, some have had luck greasing the U-joints or replacing the lower column link that contains the U-joints, others have had to replace the main column at enormous expense. There are reports that putting a grease fitting in the main gear housing and injecting grease can solve the problem.

2. To release the handle, insert a tool in the channel to release the lock, then PUSH the retaining plate with the hole. You use a hooked tool in the hole to PULL to re-engage the retaining plate. However, The problem is likely the bowden cable connecting the handle to the door catch release, which can only be accessed by removing the door card.

3. If the seat sensor is defective, resetting the light will fail because it will just come back on again. Properly applied leather cleaner should not impact the sensor. Some have claimed a heavily weighted knee on the seat can cause sensor issues.
 
Hi psychobiker,

Be careful with the door handle. I had the driver door start "sticking" then one day not open from the outside. When it was looked at the outside door handle had broken ( some small plastic clips) and the rear culprit was the internal lock mechanism. My enthusiasm to keep opening the door had broken the outer Hadley so beware. :headbang:
 
I had sticky steering on my former 2003 3.0i, read all of the horror stories online about the costs of new steering columns,

I simply got some engine oil (some may say its the wrong stuff), attached a long pipe to the oil can and applied oil to the U joints of the column (there are 2 joints).

I never noticed the problem again, and I would point out that I did over 6K miles in Europe afterwards in some hot climates, so I was happy with that.

Oil penetrates much better than grease, probably why this worked, if you want to grease something you need to get in between the two surfaces as it won't soak in by itself like oil will.
 
I've been meaning to reply about the problems I'm having but i keep forgetting and not having time.

Ive been trying to get the exterior door handle off, but cant seem to get it to release.

I pushed a flat screwdriver down the rectangle hole but it doesnt seem to hit anything in there, i believe it is meant to hit the inside of the handle release catch mechanism then you pull the brass catch forward? but I'm having no luck

Help please, what am i doing wrong? :headbang:
 
Theres a whole sticky thread on the airbag light thing .........

It came as a surprise to me to find out that the airbag light can come on for a wide range of issues that have nothing to do with the airbag ....... Its worth plugging into it to read the actual error message before you start spending huge wads of cash ......

AFAIK, the tool in the rectangular hole does not "hit" anything. When it is inserted far enough, the thickness of the tool pushes a spring catch out of the way so the brass piece can move. You PUSH the brass piece to release, towards the door hinges. Then pull on it to reengage when reinstalling the handle.
