Couple of niggles

Did a tone of reading here at Z4-Forum before buying my Z4 so I knew what to expect and after the first month of Z4 ownership, my expectations were surpassed (and then some!) but (it's not a big but) there are a few things that are bothering me....

1st off, the drivers door sounds flippin horrible when it's closed, hollow, tinny even. I've read that adding some sort of material to the innards helps, what's best, anyone done this before, templates, how-to's?

2nd, 1st car with Xenon lights and spots, but don't understand why the side lights are horrible yellow? Can this be changed easilly with a different bulb?

3rd, rattling. Sounds like it's coming from just behind and inbetween the seats, not heard with the top down. There's some recent posts on this so I'll read up on the fixes if any.

4th, 1st and 2nd gear, very, VERY difficult to be smooth, this is down to the CDV? No driving style :poke:'s please :D

5th, just speaking my mind but I hate DSP, it's making life very difficult to choose the right iPod setup (non AUX and non modulated) i.e. DICE/Dension for a non satnav'd car, both kits offer something the other doesnt and to keep the changer is near impossible.

Any help on the above is greatly appreciated, overall.....absolutely love the Z4, still smilling, could sit there all day and turn over the 3.0, it's an amazing sound. That remonds me, oh yes, sound generator...off to do some DIY :driving:

1) There are various materials to use, i.e. Dynamat. Check with your local audio installer, they usually can give you a good source and may even do the install for you if you are not mechanically inclined.

2) Are you referring to the headlight assembly itself? If so, then there is no easy change :(

3) Loacalize it and it should be an easy fix. For most rattles, a small piece of velcro works wonders

4) The Z4 has to be shifted smoothly and takes a while to get used to, the CDV delete helps but does not fully get rid of the 1-2 shift quirk.

5) Disable DSP

The side turn signals, like in your avatar, are an easy swap. The yellow in your headlights, that's pretty difficult. C10jeeper successflly did it, you'll need a second set of headlights, iirc.

I cured the problem of the tinny doors by removing the inner door card and fitting a whole series of pieces of sound deadening material. It's available from any car audio store. Made a huge difference. The type I chose is similar to dynamat and is basically a self adhesive mastic with a silvered surface. The easiest way is to cut pieces and stick then all over the panel building a big jigsaw until the entire inner is covered.

The lights I need more expmanation of what you mean? You can easily replace the sidelight bulbs with a small LED which is whiter. Teh amber indicators internal to the lights require real skill. The side repeaters are a 5 minute swap to clear lenses.

OK, need to source some sound deadening material, have a place in mind and will make sure it's adhesive on one side. Sounds like fun  to do, will have a hunt about for door trim/panel removal how-to's unless someone has OEM instructions they could pass on?

The lights I mentioned were indeed the sidelight bulbs, horrible yellow! Will have a look for LED ones, would halfords do for this or is it specialist?

When I'm feeling brave (normally takes Stella or Jamesons), I might have a pop at clear indicator strips for the healdights.

Getting better at 1st to 2nd changes, it's a case of getting used to the car, hope to be kangaroo free soon

With regards to rattles, found popping the top down and back up again fixes it for a short while, not ideal and it's bloody difficult to pinpoint the location in a roadster! Will get the girlfrield to drive it while I rummage about :?

Surely leaving the rattle is better than letting your missus drive your pride and joy? :D

Try Drivers in Glasgow for sound deadening stuff, i'm pretty sure they sell Dynamat.

Too true mate but better that than solving the mystery of the 'rattle' only to find myself in a ditch! Then again, the difference would be? :D

Drivers is the place I had in mind although after reading some door dismantling how-to's, I might live with it.

Chris, door panels are quite easy to remove so give it a go! I first took mine of with a torch in the cold and dark.

We noticed the same "tinny" feel to our doors upon closing. I'm thinking of pulling the door panels and lining the interior with mat but have never dealt with a BMW before. Is there somewhere I can get a service manual for the whole car? I have tons of manuals (.pdf) for most late-model Jeeps that have step-by-step for all maintenance....I'm hoping that there may be something similar online for the Z4. Anyone have leads?
