Couple of new owner nub questions

I'm new to ///M world, after almost a day with it I'm starting to see areas that I'd like to improve. Just hoping for some pointers in the right directions please.

I have the Nav model, 2006, so no aux connector. This must be resolved ASAP because local and national radio makes my ears bleed, and I haven't owned a CD in 10 years. I've researched that part # 82110142174 http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-11346-genuine-bmw-audio-auxiliary-input-e85-z4-25i-30i-30si-z4m.aspx is what I probably need, I'd like to go for OEM parts. Can anyone confirm this will be compatible with the 2006 ///M Nav unit? I can't find this on bmwminiparts, any pointers as to where would be my next place to look? This might work too http://www.amazon.co.uk/BMW-Genuine-In-Car-Connector-Retrofit/dp/B000P9Y5I4 but I don't know where the aux panel would go on dash?

I'm looking to source a newer nav map pack, looks like the company who originally supplied the maps have changed name/been acquired so it looks complicated. Can anyone confirm that we can still get up-to-date Nav DVD for this model and have a link to it? Also, will this just be a map update or is there any updates to the Nav software going too? The Nav is frankly dreadful to use, menus are awful, its all-round god awful so a software update would be good to know about!

I have the DSP option in my Nav unit, some basic research has shown that this usually comes with an amplifier in the boot (which I can't find). The audio quality in my ///M is dreadful, the bass is like slapping a wet lettuce with ruler and overall quality is appalling. If I have DSP, I don't think it's working or at least something is maybe missing. Can anyone confirm that DSP was an optional hardware extra, and if so would the menu option still be there in the software? I may consider a speaker upgrade but I've yet to determine whether that will be fruitless if the head unit itself is pushing out naff quality.

The firmware upgrade for the sat-nav does not make it any better I'm afraid - and the £150 cost of a new map disc is only worth it if you really want to keep the originality.

I use a TomTom myself as I can put custom POIs, routes and speed camera warnings on it - and use it in any car I happen to be driving.

The amp should be hidden behind the hard, carpeted divider between the cabin/boot - never had it apart myself as I've never had any issues.

if you've got a CD head unit and/or multi-CD player then you can use CDs with MP3s on them.

Ah, the old 'M specific' issue of the head unit and DSP :wink: (ps the head unit and sound system is the same regardless of model :thumbsup: )

What kind of music do you listen to? Might help for DSP settings. Some people find this useful http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=17407 but I prefer keeping the levels more or less flat, but dropping 80hz to -1, and upping 200hz to +9. I listen to house music mainly (deep, balearic, hard etc)

With the AUX cable, I suggest you get a quality 3.5mm cable to run to it, to maintain decent sound quality. Some of the cheaper/thinner cables don't work terribly well.

Nav can be pants, but £150 at the stealer will sort that out :thumbsup:
 
Hi.

Personally wouldn't waste my time with aux in. Spend the money towards a dice or intravee setup +ipod. Digital sound into the system Is better. You may need to check if your pre wired for cd changer if going down intravee route.
 
All UK cars are pre wired for cd changer. If AUX meets your needs its a tenth of the price of an intravee although the intravee does give other functionality.
 
Cheers for the response guys, not long got back from the lakes. After my first proper drive out in the ///M, it's amazing, but I gotta say I don't know how anyone could use one of these cars as their daily driver! My brain hurts after being rattled around and bombarded with road noise and deafening exhaust groan for 3 hours haha
To answer a question above, ironically I don't really listen to a lot of music. I tend to start a youtube video and drop the phone into the centre console and just listen to a youtube video, so its usually just voice, no real music. I'm at that point still where I don't know what a dice or intravee is, or the costs, I've not had the car long enough to work it all out yet but all I know is I need aux one way or the other.
