Hi folks,
I've a bit of a dilemma (well, more of a 'first world problem' really
) that I would welcome opinions on to judge against my heart / my fiancee's head.
I've got a 07 Monaco blue E86 that has been my daily driver for almost 6 years now. It's just ticked over 100k miles and is by no means in mint condition but nothing a bit of cosmetic TLC couldn't easily address. I'd like to think sold privately I could hopefully get £7k on a good day.
My Dad has a 07 silver grey E86 that he can no longer justify keeping, having recently purchased a campervan and only doing 600 odd miles between MOTs. He's done around 20k miles in his 9 year ownership and it's now at 60k. Other than the MV2s that could do with a refurb, it's in better nick than mine and I estimate could be valued around £9-9.5k.
Both cars are manual 3.0si in Sport spec with pearl grey interiors, factory nav, heated/electric M Sport seats, parking sensors. My Dad's has got a few extras over mine - bi-xenons, piano black trim, bluetooth, CD changer.
My parents very kindly promised a financial contribution towards my wedding just as they did with my brother. This happens to be around the value of the grey car, so my Dad posed the option of taking the cash or being gifted the grey car instead. I will probably only be in a Z4 for another 12-18 months
as my partner doesn't like my 'single-man car' as she calls it and we will inevitably require a family wagon around then.
Heart = enjoy the next year or so in a tidier car (where I can actually see where I'm going at night!), it'll be circa 70k miles when I come to sell so still a desirable proposition. Get what I can for my blue car now.
Head = get the grey car sold and pocket the cash. Carry on in my blue car to around 110k miles and hope it doesn't lose too much more value.
I'm in the fortunate position of not being desperate financially for the cash difference in value, though I'm sure the Mrs would happily put it towards something. Is she right, would I be silly to fritter it away on a 'better' car for such a short period? I'm trying to convince myself they're on different depreciation trajectories in order to justify the heart option
What do you think? Will the grey car hold more value than the blue one would continue to lose, if you see what I mean
Either way, there could be Z4C for sale soon!
