Coupe hatch rust

At some point this spring I’m going to tackle the infamous inner hatch rust on either side of my coupe. Doesn’t look too bad, but has anybody here tackled this themselves, and if so do you have any advice?

Thinking of masking off, sanding back, treating with rust remover, re-priming and spraying again whilst still on the car and fully masked up.

Its a different finish to the exterior - not as ‘clearcoaty’ inside, so interested to hear how others might attempt this.

I had the same issues but on my previous roadster. Did pretty much what you described.
I’m just surprised my coupe hatch is still in canny good condition after seeing your photos.

The taligate on my previous Coupe was starting to look like yours, although not quite as bad.

I was thinking of sanding it back, rust remover, rust inhibitor then primer, colour coat and lacquer - but I sold it before I got around to tackling it. :roll:

Luckily my current one isn't showing any signs - yet!

I’ve ordered some Monaco Blue A35 paint code paint and lacquer from Paintnuts. When the weather improves a bit I’ll take it on and get it looking lovely again. Its not deep and looks a lot worse in the photos than it actually is tbh.

Are you sure you need a lacquer? I thought it was only the outside of the panels that had lacquer on them and the inside was just paint.

Must admit, I wasn't sure. But thinking about it, makes sense that its probably not lacquered under there.

Im no expert and Im sure someone else can confirm.
I was just thinking that if you were to lacquer any of it you may have to do it all or it will look more glossy than the rest

Mine's has happened twice - but the 2nd time it was just out of the 12 year paint warranty and BMW would listen to my protestations, so another expense to add to the old girl...at some time.

You do need laquer on the paint, but not high gloss, needs to be Matt .

Is that rusting from the inside out ? If so, the only cure is to cut it out. You could on some maybe get a grommet and cut to the shape of the grommet. Spray rust inhibitor inside and fit the grommet etc ?

In both my cases it's surface rust from moisture resting in hatch frame...here (picture courtesy of 2013 post by NeilP)...

Yes. Pretty sure after researching this forum and looking at the evidence that its surface rust based on mmm-five’s picture above. Shouldn't be too much trouble to take it back, inhibit and respray with paint and and possibly finish off with a matte lacquer.

Yes I’ve always thought it to be more external. Seems to correlate with the plastic light surrounds fitting close to the inside of the lid. After washing the car, I’ve noticed they always remain wet even in summer!
