Coupe 3.0si Real World MPG

Hi all,

I've had a search for this already so apologies to mods if this is an old topic - I could only find it referenced in relation to the Z4M:

I was wondering what peoples thoughts are on real world MPG of the 3.0si Coupe?

I believe it's supposed to average 32.7 but I know from previous BMWs I've had this can be wildly optimistic!

I know you shouldn't be buying a car like this for MPG and I wouldn't be - but by God is fuel expensive now! Just paid £80 to fill up my Audi!

I'm sure it depends how you drive of course and I'm no track day special myself and only occasionally whack the loud pedal... :D

Thanks,

as you say, depends how you drive.

For me, I generally try to drive economically with infrequent bursts of exuberance.

last year I was averaging 33.5 mpg (based on odo and fuel used) using almost exclusively Shell V-Power

this year I have had more motorway driving around M6/M5 including some rush hour and some "a tad" above 70
and it's only been 31mpg

range between 29.7 and 41.5 mpg for a tankful

Thanks Nicko.

That's actually pretty good IMHO for a 3 litre sports car. Does it depend on the age of the car too? i.e. were engine revisions completed during the Coupe's life?

Anyone that knows me will know that I have a particularly heavy right foot.

Not sure how that happened... Must have been a defect at birth!

I have so far done around 11k miles in my Coupe with a fair mixture of driving and my trip is showing as 29.8 MPG

I think the E86 coupe only came with one engine, the N52B30
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_E85#Engines

the 2.5i and 3.0i roadsters look like the only models that changed engine

i have the automatic, i have owned nearly 2 years, my calculated mileage is 28mpg, there as been quite a bit of spirited driving in them figures, i have done little long distance motorway mileage which would have made it better, not bad for a 3.0ltr automatic

I get about 25mpg driving to and from work (town driving). Get on a long trip on a motorway and I get 38 to 40mpg :o :driving:

Thanks for the replies lads, much appreciated! What a friendly bunch!

Ali: 38 to 40mpg?! Seriously?! That's better than my 2.0 Audi A4!!! :o

I guess short trips are always going to be poor MPG regardless of engine type?

*stupid question alert*

Does the Z4 3.0si have stop/start? :?

I'd echo what others have said but maybe a little lower for me, 22 mpg round town, just over 30 on the motorway. Must say I've never had as high as 40, but I guess it's all about how you drive!

As for start/stop - do you mean a button? If so then no I'm afraid, just your regular key in and turn to start!

Newbie Here! Ive owned my Z4 coupe for about three weeks. My last motor was a 330 sport.

I have done a few long runs in it and on a recent trip to devon she returned an average of 32.4mpg. Even with a couple of 100mph blasts.

The usual average in and around town etc is about 29mpg on mine.

Mine is a 4 yr old manual. Excellent mpg for the perfermance me thinks, much better than compition.

Yep! Recently went from Newcastle to Birmingham and back on a work trip sat @ 70 to 80 all the way bit of slow stuff round the centre of Birmingham had reset one of the MPG computers before I set off and it came back with 38.7mpg over the run! Bloody amazing out of a 3lt straight 6

Hype: I meant stop/start like you get in the other BMW cars the efficient dynamics thing?

R26Andy: :D :D

Larochelle: Interesting, thank you!

Ali: That is truly amazing mate! If I get this I will be well happy!!!

Having had the coupe for coming up on three years now I have developed a pretty good set of figures.

Annual average in 2009 was 25 mpg, 2010 was 26 mpg based about 6,000 mile in each year. Prob 60% commute 40% more free flowing traffic/motorway/A roads. Although ranging as low as 22's for commuting.

Just done 1560 mile trip around Scotland (Motorways, A Road and scottish single lanes) and averaged 32 mpg! Not exactly hanging around either with plenty of fast paced roads and overtaking.

I've had the trip showing as much as 37/38 mpg when dawdling along at 50 in 6th gear so it is achievable. If can keep revs below 3000 on motorway mid 30's mpg is achievable.

Majority of figures quoted are calculated rather than trip computer. Hope it helps.

I usually average 30mpg per tank which is mostly short duration jorneys.

With complete town driving and heavy right footed for most of that it never drops below 25mpg and long distance crusing I can easily get 40mpg. Long distance driving with lots of overtakes sees around 35-38mpg.

On Sunday past, I went for a 100 mile trip, drove between 40&60mph on A roads with the Sunday traffic and averaged 48mpg.

It really is a good motor for a 3ltr!

I've done 22,000 miles in my Z4 3.0i since July 2010 & it's averaged 29.7 mpg. It's also been flawless. That's about 75% motorways, rest of time around town or nipping about. On m'ways I'm getting about 30mpg but I do put my foot down. At a steady 80mph I get 32.5 mpg on the m'way. Believe me, this is excellent for a 3.0 liter sports car. My previous Alfa GT 3.2 V6 averaged about 22mpg .... though that was a superior engine (cue red-rag-to-a-bull ...!) And as for my previous previous Alfa GTV 3.0 V6 mpg the less said the better, though that was a FANTASTIC engine! 8)

Average of 32mpg at 75mph on the motorway and drops down to 29-30mpg when I get into Milton Keynes with all the round a bouts and fast dual carrageways.

If you kept the car below 70 on a motorway run you would be able to get into the last 30's early 40s
I had 42mpg for about 50miles down the M1 with the 50mph average speed cameras. 8) :driving:

I've had my 56 plate 3.0si Coupé for about a week and half. Started doing my daily commute yesterday and I've been average 36-37mpg (35miles to work each way). I am truly astounded at this considering my previous car (clio 197) used to average, over a full tank, around 33-34mpg driving with cruise on at SIXTY mph. At 70 I'd be getting around 30mpg. Yes that's right, a 3 litre sports car easily gets about 60-84miles a tank MORE than my old 2.0litre hot hatch haha. I tell ya, I couldn't stop chuckling to myself.

People at work have been amazed so far with how good it is on fuel considering the type of car lol.
