Coolant type (more coolant talk...)

So apart from the headache of finding the right oil because I still don't know if the e85 can take LL 04 or not.

But the main thing is coolant. I'm half tempted to go to the dealers and just fork it up. I found G48 on Halfords which apparently is suited for my zed but I'm honestly lost at this point.

Anyone help me out? Thanks!

E85/E86 should be happy on any decent quality 5w40 synthetic oil if regularly changed, although a big miler may be better off with the higher viscosity 10w40.

Sorry, I can’t help with the coolant :?

I've been using Castrol Edge 5W30 (LL04) in my E85 for 45k miles now, changed annually irrespective of mileage. Engine is on 98k miles now, clean as a whistle and barely uses a drop. Also been using Comma Xstream G48 coolant (meets BMW GS94000) in it for as long as I've had it with no issues whatsoever

I topped up with 1L of Comma Xstream in May of last year, then very stupidly didn't tighten the cap fully (they are quite stiff to turn). So then had to top up with the best part of another 3 litres after that.
I did a check yesterday - 13 months on - and only had to add about half a litre, if that.
So yeah, I'd say Halfords' Comma Xstream G48 is ok to use.
Cheers,
Robert.

As far as the oil is concerned, I started off using Petronas Syntium 5000XS 5W-30 when I bought the car but then switched to Millers XF Longlife 5W-40 as it seemed to be better value. But then my oil consumtion went up (needing to add a litre every 2000 miles as opposed to about 3.5k with the Petronas).
Just recently my local Halfords was selling Petronas for a good price so I've gone for that again now to see if the oil consumtion improves.
Robert.

Go to autodoc

Type in reg

Buy coolant they recommend as suitable for the car. I went with febi bilstein iirc.

I think I got oil from Opie oils as it was cheaper. I use Petronas's top of the line stuff now as it's cheaper than Castrols top of the line stuff but that's what I used to use.

Both of them are used by top racing teams.

It's an extra £20 compared to cheap stuff so I don't see the point in cheaping out on oil.

Thanks mate. I have 5w30 earmarked too. My mail issue is retailers not listing the specs. I go to eurocarparts, autodoc and Halfords for price comparison and some of them just don't list the specs which us very annoying.

Right now I have Castrol edge added to my basket as it's LL04 I believe.

These are the two things in my cart so that's perfect! I couldn't fins the specs for the coolant on Halfords website mind but if you know that it meets BMW specs then that's good enough for me :P

Cheers for the info!

Neither of these brands pop up anywhere when I drop my reg in but I'll keep an eye on for deals on them and manually check the specifications for them. Thanks mate. Appreciate the info

I've tried to use autodoc and the amount of coolants and oils it throws at me for being suitable for my car is just absurd but I'll try it again. Thanks mate :)

Use the filters for brands you want to buy. Like I say I'm sure the G48 coolant I bought was febi bilstein and the oil I used is Petronas from Opie oils.

I don't bother looking at the cheap stuff and go for brands either recommended on forums or by my mechanic

G48 meets the spec but last time I priced it up vs OE coolant it was cheaper from the dealer (depending on the volume multiples you need).

Interesting. Might need to give them a ring then to see..

Use the Castrol Oil finder link :
https://www.castrol.com/en_gb/united-kingdom/home/car-engine-oil-and-fluids/motor-oil-and-fluids-finder.html?customerType=retail

BMW Castrol spec is now "M" "LL" is Volkswagen They are both I believe interchangeable but I ceased using LL when M became the new spec a xccouple of years ago
