Coolant Temp Warning

Hi,

Since the recent hot weather, my coolant temperature warning light has come on several times (amber and a red). This usually happens when I'm driving in slow moving traffic and I have the AC turned on. A BMW specialist suggested I had a water pump issue or electric pump issue and quoted me something around a grand to fix. Any thoughts from the forum on what this issue could be and what is a reasonable amount to spend for the replacement plus labour?

Cheers,
J

This could be a number of things, and need diagnosing properly.

It could be the thermostat not opening completely or the fan not cutting in as required among other things.

The fan is working just fine. I can hear and also feel the fan. I've been told by this indie that the AC condenser is in front of the radiator. And that this might cause the efficiency of the cooling system to drop if there was a water pump issue. Anyway, I'm skeptical of his diagnosis hence my reaching out on this forum. I'll be taking the car into technosport next week for a proper check up.

It's worth checking what OBD fault codes may be registered on the system, could give some direction.

I'd love to go mad scientist on this and rip it apart....

How many miles do you have on the car????

Coolant changed at any point??

Check thermostat...

Removed bumper and check for debris blocking rad efficiency...

Report back , but do NOT run to the red coolant light... As soon as you get amber , shut the car down.
