Coolant level without float

So the float is missing from my expansion tank. Is there anyway to know whether it is correctly filled without it? E.g stick a dipstick in it and the coolant level should be Xmm from the top of the tank. Or “if you and see thee coolant, it’s too high”?

The obvious solution is to replace the expansion tank but I am wondering if there is an alternative.

I’ve just changed the oil filter housing and oil cooler gaskets and lost a fair bit of coolant in the process. Also found that my car has pink coolant so I am going to change this out for genuine BMW blue coolant.

The float is definitely not there.

I took a guess at how much coolant I’d lost, topped it up and went for a short drive keeping an eye on oil temperature. That stayed at the normal level but after 10 minutes I found my engine was giving itself a steam clean! I (carefully) released the pressure and more fluid came out. I had over filled it!
