Cooking headlights

I'm not one to just take someone's word for it, I'd read that the lights couldn't be separated and though, that just can't be true!

So yesterday I spent 40 minutes baking my light and incrementing the temperate, it seemed like it was moving a tiny bit. I ended up braking some of the plastic casing off.

Today, having broken a bit of the plastic off, so now having a strip of the black plastic and of the black sealant, I decided to just put these in the oven, and see at what temperature the became tacky, so I could then do the whole light.

Got to gas mark 9, and the sealant is a good as ever, the plastic has become weak and bendy.

So if you were ever in any doubt, there is NO WAY to separate the headlights without cutting them!

Whilst possible to bake on the E46 and others its not on the E85/6.

Silicone has a melting temperature of around 350 - 400 degrees, much higher than that of any plastic.

It's always fun to ecperiment though! I tried to get mine appart without cutting them open, I managed to make the lense move about 3mm by slowly prising it away and putting shims in place as I went round, however eventually I gave up and cut them open!

Yep - they changed from a thermal adhesive to more akin to silicone around 2000. The old oven trick stopped then.

Still I bet your kitchen was warm when you finished
