Just point and hold down the button to open, and then close, keep it held down. If your car has comfort access it should open and close, if it doesn't have comfort access, it will only open the roof with the open car button pressed and held down

We got our Z4 in December 2012. Didn't pay for comfort access. We can remove roof by holding down the unlock button on the remote. The only difference from being inside the car is that the windows don't go back up (as they do if you keep the open roof button down in the car).

Closing the roof outside the car is not possible at all. Even if you put the key in the driver lock and keep it turned (this used to close the roof externally on older models, apparently). For our model the only way to close the roof is to be inside the car with your finger on the internal button.

It does seem a bit crazy that they restrict what you can do with the remote. A ploy to get you to buy comfort access I guess.

Another weird feature of our car is the lack of internal boot release button despite it being promised in the manual. It just has a blank where the button should be. Only a problem if someone is trying to open the boot and doesn't know how the badge handle thing works so you have to shout instructions at them or take the key out of the slot and use the remote.

Just got mine a couple of weeks ago with comfort access. Mine works fine. You have to hold the open button and it starts by first lowering the windows after about 3 seconds. Holding the lock button for about 3 seconds starts the closing procedure.

Comfort access is an entire system, not just software. Sensors for key proximity, different keys entirely, sensors in the doors etc...
