i was reading the handbook for the z4m last night,the book says use 10-60 oil but the ltr of oil in the boot is 0-30?which brand of oil and which viscosity do you people out there use in your z4m cars?also what brand do bmw put into the car come servicing time?i really dont want to put two types of oil in if the car needs a top up every now and then.

Get in touch with your dealer ASAP to find out what was put in to the vehicle on last service. If they put in 0W30 instead of 10W60, then that dealership NEEDS to change it immediately and on their dime. M cars MUST use 10W60 per manual and using anything lower as standard can and probably will void the warranty.

When was the oil last changed? Who did the oil change? Who put the top-up bottle in the boot?
If the car's only got about 10,000 miles on it then I'd assume it was done at a dealer, so should be easy enough to check, although they don't tend to give you a top-up bottle afterwards.
My top-up bottle was an old 1L Silkolene Pro-S 10w50 oil bottle, but it's got 'Castrol Edge 10w60 for M Engines' from a 4L bottle in it. My new bottle is a nice stainless steel one that I was given as a present (I think it's really a drinks bottle)
If it's been topped up with the wrong oil and run for a few hundred miles, then there's no way BMW would ever know it's had a top-up of the wrong oil - even with an oil analysis. The only thing that would 'tip them off' would be the top-up bottle, so simply replace that.
The ///M one has slightly less residue/ash when burnt, and thus should keep the engine internals cleaner for longer - that's why it's a long-life oil.duckson said:

the car had an oil change by bmw late last year so i am thinking its the right oil in the car.i will give them a call to see whats going on.i really cant see a dealer putting the wrong oil in and if things were to go wrong i should have a claim against that dealer i would have thought.i did ask about the oil in the boot when i was buying the car(private sale) and he said it was there when he bought the car 6 months ago.the car has only done 14500 and its an o7.

13,500 miles including M service and oil service at 10,000 miles and so far it's not needed one drop of top up oil! Makes a change from my old 911 that used a litre every 2000 miles.
I carry a litre that i bought from BMW and even running to Monaco and round the Ring, it's never needed it.
