Confused newbie has alarm and interior light problem

Hi,

First of all, big thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this and if possible offers advice because I am STUCK! My name is Andrew, recent retiree with dual Anglo-French nationality and a 2005 RHD Z4 2.0 that I bought four months ago thinking "now or never before my back gives out". The car is mainly fantastic but ever since I got it I have to leave it unlocked because otherwise the alarm goes off intermittently about once every 2-3 hours. At the same time the interior light has never worked.

About two months ago I had to change out the original battery and I got a good quality Varta which was programmed for the car but the faults persisted. I had to travel for several weeks, using my SLK (because I can lock that one) and when I got back on Friday the new battery was dead so I got a jump start. Miracle: as soon as the car was jump-started the interior light began working, not once but a dozen times, all perfectly as it should be. Then I tried locking the door and for a whole night the alarm didn't go off but around noon it started again - no tilt or other movement, no HGVs or tractors going past in our very quiet village, no way kids could have been near it, just the fault is back and the pesky interior light has stopped working again so surely they two problems must be linked in some way? I've tried to find a garage who can resolve the issue but without success and it means I can't use the car to go anywhere where it wouldn't be safe to leave it unlocked. Free help with your children's French homework to anyone who can suggest a solution.

Merci beaucoup

Welcome aboard Andrew.
Just checking: you do mean a 2005 model do you? Only you've posted in the G29 section.
Assuming it is a 2005 then open the bonnet and at the back, where the two strut braces meet, there is a plunger for the alarm.
Disconnect that and see if it solves your alarm issue.
Not sure how that would link to the interior light tbh, but you could be lucky.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply; I'm not great on navigating forums and couldn't find one for E85 Z4s; that's what we call them in France, perhaps it's different in the UK? I eventually posted on G29 because I didn't now where else to look! It's a nice sunny afternoon so I'm off to try to find the "plunger" though if it doesn't have a big label saying alarm plunger I'm a bit wary of disconnecting anything. My mechanical knowledge ended when I fixed the semaphore indicator on my 1958 Wolseley 15/50 using sellotape!

There IS an E85 sub-forum, bit further down the page.
While you're out there, we always like to see photos of people's zeds.

I've got a lovely photo I took of it on the journey back to France but it's too high resolution and I can't find a way to reduce it. Will look out the E85 sub forum and repost my question if your solution doesn't work. Installing new bookcases for Madame this afternoon, so sunny or not no cars for me!

Hello, I was just wondering if it is possible to swap switch the locking system : now when the car goes up to 20mhp, all doors lock automatically.. but when car stops and I want to open, the passenger side door , I have to use the central locking button or unlock from the inside... is it possible, , , when the car stops. and when open the driver’s side door and then unlock all the doors . Thanks ☺️

I looked everywhere on various coding tools but I can't find it anywhere.
It is annoying isn't it?
There is an option to set it so the doors don't auto lock though.

Hello mate I have obd2 socket but I can’t not faund any similar … how to switch it off or something like that.. yes it’s annoying:/

You can disable the auto locking feature with BMW Scanner 1.4 or NCS Expert software.
