Compression test

I have a problem with a mis fire which appears to be gettoing worse.I have been told I need to do a compression test tocheck everything is Ok. Are there any special techniques on an M and what pressure should be obtained?
 
I`m not sure of the figures for a std engine (180-200 ?) I was running lower compression on my E46 M3 when I had it done but your looking for very close figures across all cyl`s. If you have a problem, 1 or 2 cyl`s will be down. No special procedures on the S54 and a good garage should be able to do it in half an hour.
