Composite Star Spoke 108s- Identifying Front/Rear?

Hi all,

I've been lurking here for a while, but this is my first post I believe (because I want something  !)

I've put a deposit down on a 2006 3.0si Roadster, fitted with 108 wheels that have been recently refurbished. I noticed that the tyres had been incorrectly fitted, with a 255/35 on the front :!: . Not a major problem, and it's already been rectified by the dealer, but it got me thinking...

If the wheel refurb guy was so... let's be generous and call it "absent-minded" :P ... that he fitted a rear tyre to the front (and vice versa), how do I know that tyres have been fitted to the correct wheels? (i.e. 225/40 to the 8J and 255/35 to the 8.5J). It's obvious on my current Z3 3.0i... the rears have a noticeably deeper dish, but as far as I can tell the 108's are physically identical front/rear.

Is there an easy way to identify the difference between the front and rear wheels (assuming no access to a wheel measuring caliper)?

Cheers,

Pete.

Hi Pete,

What an absolute plonker. Was this a main dealer?

You will be able to tell rear wheels apart from the front as the holes where the wheel bolts go are deeper on the rear wheels due to the wider rim.

Hope this helps :D

Hi JDM, thanks for the reply...

No, it's not from a main dealer, but part of the deal was they got it serviced by a BMW dealer, so hopefully they've done the "due diligence" bit!

I'm searching for all pics of 108's I can find, and if there is a difference in the bolt hole depth it must be awfully subtle :o !

Unfortunately, the car's about 70 miles away, so "just popping round for a look" is not really an option!

Might be an idea to call a BMW dealer and ask them?

Saying that.... I'm sure someone will be along with the right answer!

Oh and congrats on your first post, welcome to the forum :driving:
