Common Problems and Products

Hey all!
This thread is supposed to be for general topics that are common problems or question for this gen z4.
I'm not even close to a senior member but I've seen a lot of repeat questions and figure that new members should have a place to go for the small questions.
Feel free to update with any things that you think are important to know and you might help out a newbie!
IM AMERICAN SO LINKS WILL BE TO USD UNLESS PROVIDED BY ANOTHER FORUM MEMBER

EDIT: Will be updating with important threads and links, to make this the biggest mega thread possible.

Interchanges
To look up interchanges, RealOEM.com is probably the best website to use. All you need is to figure out which category that the part you need is in.

Common Problems

Roof and/or Roof Motor
- https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=130436&hilit=roof
- https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1894902&hilit=roof#p1894902
- Instructions
With these roofs being what they are, there are many different solutions to specific problems, here are the most generalized.
1) Check the motor itself. Stock, the motors are located in the water drainage hole for the drivers side, and ofter become waterlogged and corroded, so you would want to check the motor itself, and test its mobility and 'conductivity' if that makes sense.
2) Check the proper shelf and pin. The shelf should be in the down position in order to properly support the roof as it folds down. The PIN is the red loop that's on the top trunk lining, and it needs to be pushed all the way in. If yours is not simply pull it out and spin the loop so that the plastic piece jutting out is lined up and can fit snugly in its spot. Additionally you may want to check the bobber on the motor side as well as I know with the waterlogging, it can get stuck quite easy.
3) If nothing else, check the 'latch' motor on the top of the windshield, because if the roof cant unlatch, then it can go anywhere (there are ways to loosen this without the use of the motor, you'll just need the proper tool to spin the bolt of that motor)

Heated Seats
- I have a lot of personal threads on this topic, so I'll simply explain it as If I know. For prior knowledge, these seats are wired in parallel and its pretty uncommon for the both to go bad simultaneously, unless you blew a fuse.
1) check the fuses for the seats (12 and 16, 16 being the most prominent). Additionally if you go to my heated seat thread, there are other wiring diagrams linked by another user (enuff_zed, link below) which can help you track anything that's a continuity issue.
2) Make sure the plug is seated correctly. Many people have stated that while driving the plug has come undone, and is definitely something to check.
3) Finally, you want to check the center switch that houses the button for the heated seats, as those can rarely go bad on their own. As far as I know, there's no way to really check it, besides the obvious signs of no power or other buttons not working.

RETRO-FIT SEATS
This seems to be a lot of the topic of conversation and very hard to explain so I will solely be giving links

As a senior member pointed out below, this is essentially just a generalized version of what this forum does. If you want to search the depth of this forum, this link will take you to "e85/e86 discussion" where you can see more specific topics and questions. https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=3 Thanks!

Hi, you do know this section exists on the forum with a search facility to bring relevant topics? :?

I didnt! the link you gave just went to the forum in total, whereas this thread is supposed to be a "common problems" almost. I have recently taken to responding to unasnwered topics and have seen a lot of recurring questions on things that were already covered so im trying to give the newbie an all in one. I figure I spend enough time on here that it would be nice even for me to keep a "bookmark" of threads.

I figure I'll share an alternate option for bluetooth. This only applies to those who have AUX in. I find the FM audio in my car (Z4C) to be quite terrible. CDs for some reason don't sound great either. I find AUX in audio to be acceptable. I purchased the MaedHawk bluetooth receiver. I already had a cigarette to USB power adapter. Either way this is a cheap option that I've been happy with.

My phone connects very quickly and reliably to this thing. My only gripe is with the car. The cigarette lighter port seems to be powered all the time. I have to remember to pull up on the adapter slightly to break the connection. If I don't do this next time I get in the car the phone doesn't want to connect. I wonder if the car can be coded to shut off the cigarette lighter socket when the key is turned off.

When I click on Rob's link it takes me straight to the E85/86 Problems index?
Aren't you attempting to simply duplicate this but hidden in one thread rather than easily visible titles?

Not trying to shoot you down, but I think you may be complicating something that is already there?

No offense taken. Yes essentially an all in one thread for the most common problems. So many answers have been given on the site, and I know that even for me its easy to overlook the easiest solution, and I'm trying to provide that in one place, so that I don't spend hours looking for a solution on threads with more complicated problems.
Edit: Cant argue with either of your logic. Essentially you're right. Just trying to make it easier for the little guys like myself :)

Awesome and thanks much! Ill include the link in the main post so that anyone who sees this wont have to scroll through to find it!

Ps, the shelf should be in the “down” position, not “up” otherwise the roof won’t operate
