Coding New Key

Hi all.

I finally had a shiny brand new second key provided by the dealer I bought my Z from (long story, dealer had 'lost the 2nd and valet keys' - nearly made me walk).

The metal part of the key has been cut/grooved and it's in an official bag with BMW labels on it.

Do I need to code it to the car in any special way before using it?
I'm loath to just stick it in the car in case I lose any of my settings or anything.
Can't envisage anything bad - but any thoughts? I've searched on the forums but not found anything...

Thanks in advance,
Si

If it came from your dealer then it should just work - try it, you won't do any damage, trust me :bag:

Cool - thanks Mike.
I guess they have codes/templates linked to the chassis from the factory or something?

All, sorry to bump this, but does anyone know how I code the car to remote lock/unlock??

The car starts the engine fine, but will only manuall-unlock the car - is there a 'pairing' trick or something???

Thanks in advance,
Si

Yes, you need to do an initialization procedure - note it needs to be done for both keys when you do the new one, or your existing key will lose it's remote capabilities. When I bought my car the dealer had to order the second key for me as well.

Here's a web link I found that describes the process - looks to be about the same (method 2) I had to use when I did it the first time, with the new key and my existing key. Make sure both doors are shut when you are in the car.
