Coding - NCS vs SSS

Hi all,

Myriad of questions from me at the moment...!

I've bought a cable and software to code options on my Zed. The options I'd like, from looking at the Google doc kindly recently updated by a member on here, show that some are available in SSS. For example, Visual disarming states SSS software, where as automatic central locking after drive off suggested NCS Expert...

Does this mean "solely" or can I still code those options against SSS in NCS Expert, as I'd like to just get used to one programme!

If you are going to start coding you will be better learning NCS and get yourself a copy of NCS Dummy, also have a good read here as some modules can be bricked if not done properly http://www.bmwcoding.com/

Hmm. I just paid a visit to http://www.bmwcoding.com/ and read the getting started message. The first thing I see is a recommendation to buy a cable for $85! I used to think gold-plated HDMI cables were the ultimate scam, but it looks like somebody's pushing the envelope.

Seriously, though, has anyone had success with more sensibly-priced cables? I see there are lots on Amazon priced between £10 and £20. I actually have a USB-OBD2 cable that I bought with some rinky-dink coding software that I've never used because it only works on Windows XP, which I can't be bothered to reinstall.

The price of the cable is irrelevant no need for expensive one at all, in fact mine cost me £10 on ebay - Windows XP is the preferred OS for maximum error free usage of INPA/NCS etc and trust me the last thing you want is a flaky installation of the software suite whilst coding as I said some modules are easily bricked and very expensive to replace.
Installation under Windows 7 is possible but take some doing to get it running correctly and requires a Virtual Machine to be setup running XP
For any installation you will also need access to the latest BMW Daten files (which can be found with some considerable effort) but are not freely available.

I myself have an old compaq laptop that runs XP running INPA/NCS Progman etc.

Thanks. It looks like it's welcome back to XP, then. At least it's not Windows 95! I've had problems in the past with USB ports accessed from a VM, so it's probably better to sacrifice an old laptop.

Would I be correct in thinking that any BMW Daten files from this decade would probably be OK for a 2006 E85?

Depends on what versions of software your car has been updated to by the dealer, as a rule of thumb it is always best to use the latest Daten files.
I may be able to help you acquire them  :topicclosed:

Having used both NCS and SSS in the past to code my old E46 M3 I've since discovered a much easier to use phone app that can code pretty much everything that SSS progman can do (and probably more), and some things that in the past could only be done with NCS expert.

It's called Carly for BMW and so far I've activated auto up passenger window and indicator flash when arming the alarm. It certainly won't give the option to enable M-Track on your M, but for pretty much everything else it's as easy as connect to your car, scan for modules, tick the options you want and then code.

This is the link to it http://www.mycarly.com/product/bmw-app/ though I can't comment on the iPhone version as I'm an Android user. Also a obd2 cable connection to the car will give you more options than using the Bluetooth type.
