Clutch judder

My other half commented yesterday that she finds it hard to pull away smoothly in first gear

Also sometimes the gearbox is reluctant to engage first gear, she has to dip the clutch a second time

I have noticed it too, I had the CDV removed but to be honest didn't notice a great difference

Is it just a characteristic of the drivetrain or the sign of something (clutch?) going wrong?

Doest sound abnormal to me.

Mine is often difficult to put in first when cold, its fine when warm.... You get used to the gearbox... When i havent driven it for a while i forget how to drive it... And its jumping all over the place!

I've heard changing the gearbox oil can help... But i havent tried it myself. On my previous car i got that changed after 4 years and the ear change got noticeably easier.

+1

I changed the transmission fluid in mine about 2months ago. I'd say there was a noticeable improvement - 30% ish. The BMW oil is expensive and comes in 5litre bottles. You only need 1.6litre (from memory). The 5lt of mtf 2 was £105. I've got some left you can use if you're nearby Essex.

I had clutch judder in my 3 series similar to what you're describing. Only happened on really cold starts.

Fluid change sounds a good idea

I had something similar on mine... dealer replaced the clutch, fortunately for me it was still (just) inside the AUC warranty.
