Clunk from wiper

I have a clunk noise appearing to come from my driver's side wiper as it reaches the top of it's arc. Sounds as though the wiper is hitting something but it is not getting close to the A pillar or the roof.

I have searched the forum but cannot find anything sounding the same. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On a related issue, my wipers rarely stop at the bottom of their arc. They almost always park about 1 to 2 inches up the arc.
 
Can't be sure but I've read on the forum somewhere that the linkage below the plastic trim can break/come loose. I'm not sure this is your issue but it could be. If it is BMW will charge you an arm and a leg for a replacement but there was a cheap diy fix that seems to work. Good luck.
 
Do you have a picture how your wipers sit in their stationery position? Reason I ask is because there is a community issue where the wipers Park themselves higher than they should. Something to do with the wiper motor needing to be cleaned.

When my wipers are in operation (intermittent wipe) they do Park themselves just above the lowest position they go. I've been told this is normal and the ones with a problem usually Park much higher, like half way up the windscreen.

You can access the wiper motor by removing the scuttle panel and the wiper arms. This is an easy job that will only take about 10 minutes. After that you can see the motor doing it's thing.

This is likely to be the issue where the bush has collapsed leaving metal to metal contact.
 
Thanks for the replies. If it ever stops raining I will get out and have a look at the items suggested.
