Been looking at 3 series verts , spotted some that looked ok at first glance , did mot checker and found discrepancies on the mileage on some , but no sign of the tamper red dot showing on the display.?
So was wondering can they be clocked without the red dot showing, anyone know.?
Coz I was thinking no red dot its genuin mileage.

Don't know the technical answer to this but when I had my old 330 E46 the offside rear abs sensor broke. This in turn also happens to be the same sensor that makes the speedometer and mileage work. Wasn't intending to but drove it around for a good while like this and the mileage didn't go up at all. :oops:
 
E36 and E46 are easy to have the mileage "corrected"...

E9x not so much..

Discrepancies can be as simple as the MOT guy writing down the incorrect mileage at test time...
 
I wouldn't go off what they put down on the MoT, they always put I down wrong, they did it on my last car I think
 
I once looked at a X5 for my wife that Hpi'd clear but flagged up on the national mileage register. When I looked into it was because some numpty MOT tester had incorrectly recorded the mileage as 353,000 instead of 33,000. Everything else checked out on the car, other Mot's, history etc so we did buy it.
Just be careful and make a judgement call, does it look like a simple typo has screwed things up records wise. Or has something altogether more sinister been going on.
Bear in mind these "mileage correction specialists" can in most cases can get a displayed mileage to be whatever you want it to be without any signs of tamper (red dot etc). However the displayed mileage and the true recorded mileage in the ECU can be completely different values on a lot of cars. These can usually be read separately with the right diagnostic equipment etc.
