Clear rear lights...help required please

Hi guys

Quite a while back, I bought some new rear lights for my zed roadster from German ebay. THey required spraying. I wanted to get the clear indicator and symmetrical look that quite a few ppl have done. After many questions and help from Dreamer, I prepped my lights and sprayed one. Built up layers of tint spray etc.

However, it didnt look right at all. The red tint spray was the wrong shade of red completely, compared to the OEM standard ones that are already on. So I managed to remove it all after an hour or so of elbow grease! See pic below for the lights prepared for spraying

Therefore, I need someone to help me out with advice on a darker red tint spray that will match the OEM's. Been trying to sort this out for ages, just lack of time at the weekends is restricting me to projects on my zed :-(

Any help would be great!

i also bought some from the german ebay site but mine only had the main part of the light clear not the entire light.

i did as follows:-

1. Bought a can of light tinting spray from ebay using the info from here (cant remember off hand who it was?) will come back to you on that one.
2. Masked off the indicator light, and applied the spray making sure it didnt dry in between otherwise it loses the 'gloss' look.
3. I then gave the lights a few coats of clear laquer from halfords. seemed to work well after a few coats.

it sounds simple, however if you take your time and be careful the results should look great, i did mine about 6 months ago now and they still look factory, and i have no issues with laquer peeling etc?.

Just double checked and this is the stuff i used, its a small can so you might need 2 just in case ?.

Item number just in case the above link doesnt work. 270428306606

good luck and i hope that helps..

I used the same E-tech spray.

Really not sure how you can go wrong sadgamble?? If you want it darker you carry on spraying more layers. Simple as that.

Thanks for the responses guys. Guess I must have just been a bit anal with it all. Im gonna order some more spray and have another go at it. Sorry for the hassle, just want to get the zed looking its best of course! :-)
Once I've sorted it I promise to post pics so you can all have a laugh at the mess I make! haha

Thanks all

Does the red tint spray dry matt or gloss??

Thats the ones Russ

It dries glossy. But unless you want it to fade after a couple of months you have to give them a few coats of clear laquer. Which will look more matt until you build up the layers to a gloss finish

Yes Russ, they are the exact ones I got....and sprayed all with Dreamers help (and a few others)

Mine are all done now and looking good, just not had the time to put them on the zed yet which is killing me! Lets hope tomorrow is good weather to get them hooked up!....And don't worry, I'll get some pics up here!

Cheers

No time? 15 min for the rear lights, 10 min for brake light and 2 min for the side ones...

Cheers fellas, I may well look into this now.

Does the already red part need spraying too, or just the clear part?
Will the 2 reds match if just spraying the clear part?

Alright peddy fair point. Just been doing long hrs so think it'd be a bit harder to change them in the dark! :D Don't think I'm gonna bother with the 3rd break light tho...I've got a black zed and think the standard red one will look better?

Russ - Mask off the whole reflector section, unlike the picture shows. I was luckily advised this before I started spraying. All you will have is the round outer breaklight to spray.

Just make sure you do very thin layers. One layer every 15mins, then they'll look great. Then do the same with the clear lacquer (get that from Halfords for about 6quid)

Hope that helps!
