If your buying from halfords then the I will certainly vouch for the meguiars smooth surface clay kit.
This was the first ever clay experience i had and tbh i still use it when I run out and need a quick fix when I have no time to wait.

Zymol is very overpriced with a lot of products and at present all clays are patented by one sole manufacturer that distributes to all manufacturers so many of the clays are all the same just diferent colours and softness.

If you were to order online then without question bilthambre clay is the best on the market both for cost and quality.

This seems to suggest that swirl marks are not caused by using a circular motion when polishing and more to do with the way the light is radiated

Light plays a major part in the visuals of swirls.
True, not all swirls are from circu;ar motions, technically, they are straight lines and due to how the light reflects is to how they are portrayed.
Key factors are grit being dragged along the surface, polsihes not being broken down correctly when used, poor drying and more.
You get a more even displ.acement of pressure through the V and H method thus less chances of swirling being caused due to uneven application pressures or polishes not being broken down sufficent enough.
