Claybar or scratch remover first???

My friend has told me about the claybar and how good it has been on his car. No i have a small scratch on the rear wing, and was going to get some scratch remover, someone recommended meguires.

May question is, should i use the claybar first and then the scratch remover, or the other way round?? I was told that you should polish and wax the car after using the claybar, so using the scratch remover straight away would be pointless. But i could use it after a couple of weeks.

If anyone can recommend any other scratch removers or good claybars, that would also be appreciated.

Cheers

Neil

What scratch remover are you referring to?

If it is just a filler/polish like AG SRP then clay, fill/polish, wax.

I'm guessing he's referring to Meguiars Scratch X; in which case PLEASE BE CAREFUL. It is powerful stuff, even by hand, so take your time.

Personally I would start off with something less abrasive first, depending on how bad the scratch it. Scratch X may get the scratch out, but can also leave you with really bad paintwork if you do it badly.

Yes i was referring to Meguiars Scratch X as a friend recommended it to me, said it sorted his out.

Is there something you would recommend that is less harsh?

Post up a picture of the scratch, as that'll give an idea to the amount of work it'll need. Nothing wrong with Scratch-X, but it can leave a bad haze afterwards if you polish too hard/too much.

Claybar wont do anything to scratches. Can you feel the scratch with your nail, and if so is it deep? Finally if you wet the scratch does it still appear?

Deep scratches most likely wont just polish out, and if you can still easily see the scratch when its wet it could be below the Clear Coat.

Good advice from Paul there - forgot to ask that! If you can feel it with your nail, you'll not rid the scratch with polish, but you will be able to dull it a bit.

Not specifically said in the responses but the claybar is purely for removing surface dirt such as tar spots, paricles embedded into the lacquer, etc. Creates a clean surface before you start the various polishing, glazing, waxing.

Hi Guys, i can actually feel it a little with the nail, so think i won't bother doing anything further with it.

I have polished it a few times in the past and it has dulled it a little.

I purchased a clay bar kit, so will be on with that after i have picked up my Z4M alloys at the weekend.
