CIC Screen how to remove ‘blotches’

B21

Lifer
As part of my ever growing stockpile of end of the world parts bought a 2026 CIC screen..

But..it’s got a few ‘water marks’ on the screen..they haven’t shifted with normal cleaning agents..

Anybody successfully addressed this ..?

If you have used water based, try alcohol based or vice versa.

Alcohol screen wipes are usually good.

They look like scratches on your photo.

Thnx.there are some scratches but the 'spots' is my first line of attack..

I understand there's an anti glare film but once your've polished that away its a glosssy screen I gather,,

Try a soft cloth and isopropyl alcohol.

Well it kind of worked..the ‘spots’ got bigger..the ‘spots’,must have been holes in the top layer of anti reflective coating…

Bitten the bullet and decided to polish off the whole coating…working steadily with silver polish…

Next layer still looks matt..Will see how it looks when booted up..

Compared to all the highly reflective android head units still will be less glare..

Decided to abandon the android head unit as car play gives me all I need plus core idrive..CarPlay on android big screen offers nothing extra..and you don’t have the cute pop up n down bit..

Get some plastic polish and cleaner. Remove the coating and replace with a screen protector.

Thnx…not sure I’ll need a protector but we will ‘see’..

Taken the strategic decision NOT to install an Android head unit in lieu of the current idrive screen…

Given the sexy and shiny ID4Motion digital cluster I felt an equally shiny Android screen would match it well.

So I bought a Hi-Fi Max 10.3” unit (as well as trying their 12” monster)..

However the reality is that I use CarPlay extensively and/or the CIC core functions such as the Nav..

CarPlay doesn’t need / benefit from any increases in resolution or screen size…so I’ve abandoned it..

I was forced to buy a CIC head unit when my original died…but I’ve now had that repaired.

I saw a CIC screen from a 2015 car on eBay and made a cheeky offer which was accepted.

So I’ve got two screens and two head units…

The 2015 screen had some blotches which contrary to thoughts were not stains but holes in the anti reflective top layer.

So bitten the bullet and tried to fix that issue…

I used silver polish initially then bought some premium specfic fine plastic polish.

Very pleased with the result.

Maybe you could use a further finer polish to get a more glossy finish but not sure that’s a benefit with roof down in sunlight..

I’ll confirm it works well when it’s fitted…probably next winter..

Food for thought

Funny you mention this, as I've been speaking to two different owners regarding the pop-up iDrive screen over the last couple of weeks.
In no particular order, one is going to be fitting a brand new replacement LCD into his old housing. One of these...

Obviously this isn't going to produce anything extra to the infotainment system within the car, but it will look shiney and new, which will keep it OEM.

Whereas the other is going to be fitting an Android touchscreen into and original iDrive screen, using an Android unit designed for the 3 series (E9*), as these are 8.8" as opposed to the E89 screens that are 10.25"
This will bring all the features of the Android screens, plus your OE system info, with touchscreen, should you need it, but without having to fit an MMI box. With it being the 8.8" screen keeps it perfectly within the specs of the original screen, and should be able to be fitted within this without too much modding, well that's the plan.

So I awaiting the results of both to see how we can progress in the future once they all start failing!

As you say interesting…I’ll wait… :tumbleweed:

Depends where you are starting from..with a nice mr 12 volt MMI box I reckoned trying to keep that AND fit an android unit was going to be a bridge too far..

Can’t really comment till I try this one roof down..the android units were pretty bad roof down for a lot of the time with really bad reflections.. :headbang:

From an ergonomics and safety viewpoint touch screens really aren’t helpful…the idrive knob interface is much less distracting when trying to load navigation waypoints and bounce at speed across the Highlands..

The former unit if it’s plug n play may be a lifesaver for cic screens…

I just love the cute pop up feature of the unit..and as I’ve discovered now having fitted and used so many car play units screen resolution and area aren’t really needed to make them very useable ..

Each to their own..

PS.. https://www.bimmer-tech.net/category-vividscreen-idrive-display-for-bmw-vividscreen

PPS 240 nits for that screen is not that bright for outdoor use..an iPhone 13 is 800+ nits

Would be no need to keep the mr12volt with an Android screen, as CarPlay and Android Auto are built in. If it's the digital audio you need then a AUX to MOST box would sort that, well as close as you can get and most wouldn't notice the difference, especially at 70mph down the motorway with the roof down, or even up for that matter!

Can't argue with that, some were bad, so yes that could be a potential downside.

Good job all original equipment is retained then, so you still have the OE iDrive controller that would control everything.

Yes it's got all original connections as per the current LCD panel, so plug-n-play.

FWIW ..I think many of the newer Android head units support USB sound out..

I tried this with USB sound out to USB in on my Match 8 DSP, also USB in on my desktop amp and also USB out to a Audioquest Dragonfly DAC

Plus simple aux into my E89 Aux and desktop amp..

Frankly hard for my ears to discern the differences
