Chirp / Rattle of gear changes - 35iS : Wastegate ?

I had this on my 11 plate 35iS - and it is more pronounced on my 13 plate 35iS. A rattlesnake chirp almost is the best way I can describe it. On upshifts in normal driving. Noticeable more in built up areas as opposed to anywhere open.

I thought wastegates but the dealer thought otherwise and hasn't cured it. It is basically normal - as I have had it on 2 cars to varying degrees ?

It sounds like a slightly rattling heatshied - on upshifts when you ease off slightly as the car changes. Certainly not when pushing on. I am thinking wastegate but say heatshield to try and explain it.

Ideas ? Normal ?
 
Mine does the same thing - I've driven a good few 35is and they did it too.

You can make it louder & more noticeable if you aggressively upshift (put it in sport + with gearshift to left).

It's only really obvious though when driving on small roads with house either side.... then you really hear it.

I would say completely normal behaviour for a turbo car - I like the noises, best feature of the car for me :)

I dont have a rattle but my exhaust pops and bangs on the up change.....

Sounds great,i cant just emulate it all the time...Im trying to learn how to make it happen on command...lol...
 
Yeah I've had this for years, tried to get the dealer to sort it but they claim they never hear it. Its definitely the waste gates (if you've discounted the exhaust flap).
 
Interesting post, not heard this yet but then still running in so only rarely go to 4k rpm. Surmising the chirp is on high revs and hardly surprising on a twin turbo. Who's going to be first to drop a dump valve in?
 
They already have recirc dump valves on...

You can buy a modded pipe with twin vent to air dump valves on.... I think it was about £500 IIRC...

I may weigh it up and make my own.
 
I don't think a dump valve will help. The noise is the actuator rod that controls the wastegate.

I think you just have to learn to accept the noise. If it rattles really badly then you have a case for turbo replacement under warranty.

You could completely eliminate it by changing to after-market turbos but that's expensive and will void your warranty completely.
 
I had a 35i pull up next to me in a traffic jam on the opposite side.
With my window down, all I could hear was the sound of nails being shook in a cocoa tin sound from it's rear.
 
Thanks for the replies. I was thinking it is normal as it would be a bit odd to have 2 that did it ... but it is reassuring to hear others have it too ! Not a big issue ... I will put it down to a 'characteristic' of the car :D

Re the exhaust popping ... my 28K mile 35iS popped and banged in sport in a most excellent way - the newer one at 2450 miles hardly did it at all. I am now pleased to announce that as it nears 6K miles it is beginning to pop and bang just like my old 35iS. Not as loud yet but really is noticeably improving with miles ... as is the performance :evil:
 
The pops and bangs are in sport mode more - not the 'rattle' AFAIK. The rattle is, as has been said, noticeable more in built up areas as the sound reflects off the houses, etc.
 
Sport mode in auto (not using manual shift) pops n bags a treat when shifting up - rumbles coming down. Very addictive! I also hear the wastegate noise at times. No issues just the cars characteristics.

There are many arguments over the worth of 99 RON fuel ... but I use it - on holiday + a couple of tanks of 97 RON and the car felt to me flatter high up the rev range.

I guess that is mainly as I knew I hadn't got my preferred Shell 99 RON in it ! I live 1/2 mile from a Shell station so the natural fill is V Power. It also allegedly contains a load more cleaning agents - I seem to remember 4 times the amount of normal unleaded ?

Interesting....

I will start using i think... There is a tesco selling 99 octane for £1.17 thats in the nearest town...

See if it makes any difference...
