Chipping away

Noticing an on going issue which is really putting a dampener on the z for me. I've hardly driven it recently but every time i take it out, it returns with new damage to the paintwork. I drive it carefully, never tail gate and drive annoyingly slow over bumps etc ... I look after it so well.

Anyhow, it is picking up chips left right and centre. The doors are getting a battering which I find odd as are the mirrors with small deep stone chips which mark whenever a stone flicks up. These stones are coming from my tyres too .. Not traffic around. Had some crap cars in the past but still looked after them and never had things like this appearing on every panel.

Tonight .. Doing about 15mph a stone flicks up, hear that clink and it leaves this in the middle of the door

Yes its only 3 small scuffs but it is through lacquer and the paint layers. Side skirts, wings bonnet and bumper are getting it too which is fair enough but doors aswell? This is the third set of chips to the drivers door in about the same number of drives :( so frustrating.

Anybody else find this? Maybe I have an odd tyre pattern which chucks it up? And lastly would smart repairs to areas such as for panels look OK or do they tend to stand out amongst the bmw orange peel finish? Meh

Sorry that your on a downer with your Z, I think it's just bad luck, I've not had any problems with mine, fingers crossed.

Cheers Darren. Yes maybe, I do have bad luck when it comes to this sort of thing. Wrong time wrong place maybe. Literally nipped to the shops tonight as the weather was good, otherwsoe I would have driven the 13 year old 206 gti which takes everything i can throw at it, and has done for years.

Just hate seeing cars get damaged, especially your own. Can't be arsed polishing/waxing it at the moment as I see more and more new marks.

My bonnet and wings are peppered, as are the rear of the side skirts... And the backs of the mirrors. I think some of it is because the car is so low - so on a 'normal' car the stones would hit the front or go under the side skirts / mirrors. Some of it is because I've done a lot of motorway driving. Lots of potholes don't help because the crap that comes out of them is all over the roads. Front mud guards might help with the skirts, but personally I don't like how they look.

I get scratches appearing down the rear wings of my car too, really light, which is weird because I am really carefull round the car in the garage and where I am parking it - some of that may be stones too :?

Don't know about smart repairs as I have not had it done, but I did have reasonable success just touching up with a tooth pick and then smoothing down. But they didn't all go well, it took a feckin' long time, and I didn't even go near the bonnet, too depressing.

Personally I am just going to ignore most of it until I can afford a front respray + professional detail. On something like that I'd either try to touch it up or try the smart repair.

Sorry, bit of a ramble

My wing mirrors have taken a beating - they look like Laurence Fishburne's face.

No that's good to hear Bing. Makes me thing I'm not the only one getting pent up about this. I too keep finding really light scratches all over the show ... Like you I can't see how they appear other than stones. Car parks on a locked driveway, no kids about and I don't tend to leave it anywhere public at the moment. SWMBO has had a go at me that I'm moaning about some marks, just to make matters worse. Haha. Never mind. Yes I think I'd make more of a mess with correcting it myself, may just wait for a few more marks, the roads to improve then find a decent person Berkshire/Wiltshire/Oxfordshire way to give it a going over.

Sorry for a Friday night moan

My Z was full of stone chips when i got it
Had both wings resprayed and the body shop said they had never seen a 6 year old car with so many stone chips down the wings until a boxster came in the same week it was terrible and a year newer than mine as Mr Bing said i think its just bad luck and a low car

Si-forks is tapatalking

I have the same problem with mine.... But worse as its black!

The bumper got resprayed recently but think i'll need to get the wings and bonnet done soon.

Negativity aside today, I feel better in a selfish way that I'm not the only one who finds this and gets frustrated by this. So a bit of bonding with her today in the sun to try rekindle the fire a bit. Roof down listening to the smooth purr makes it all better.

So on a positive note, decided to give the roof another AG treat but with a bit more force as the green roof has been making things look shabby to me ...

Well I'm in the right section so I'll post a few more. Hopefully not too much of a bore.... Basic wash, no clay polish or wax as I can't be bothered looking at the paintwork.

Then a quick going over her insides ... I don't like jet washing bays so just a wipe down with rags

There ya go - feeeeeel the love. Looks great

Treat her nice and the rewards will feel effortless. Just like a good woman actually :D

Cheers Swiftly, constantly have zeditis on this forum and think every other zed looks better and I can never work out why :tumbleweed: To be honest I'd had it a while before I really managed to appreciate the colour, probably because this winter has been grim. Obviously it is all in the colour name but it does show the lines off well and seems to look vastly different in colour in different lights which I love! Red leather with it must look amazing.. I'll have a trawl through your posts!
