China leading the way in roadbuilding solutions

A simple concept to build a road down a river but in China they actually made it work :driving: how come they seem to have solutions to motoring problems that the UK can't seem to match :?
What's more amazing is it was only conceived & designed in 2013 yet finished last week :o Its taking 6 months to replace 8 miles of central barriers on the M65 near me 8)

If the solution to motoring problems is to ruin rivers with roads above them then you are truly fcucked !

Having said that it is quite impressive !

well for a start, cheap labour and limited health and safety. i dread to think how many people died building that but a nice bit of tarmac nevertheless

over here it would take forever to get planning permission and then the lazy @ss workmen to actually build it without going on tea breaks every 2 minutes

It might be impressive but I don't like it and can not see it catching on.

Will their emergency and breakdown services arrive by boat?

Technically a great solution, but what a destructive way to develop the country.
Imagine doing that in the UK.

As a side note it does speak for local drivers when in the 4th photo 2 cars are clearly both headed in opposite directions on the same side of the road over a solid line and around a bend.

Well spotted

That was my point , they took a problem , worked out a solution & got on with it in under 2 years ,
It shows what can be done but i agree it has blighted what looked to be a stunning landscape but in a way that can be said for most infastructures like bridges , the Millau Bridge in France a prime example ? A beautiful gorge i drove down & up the other side numerous times before the bridge was built

My frustrations are with how the UK tackles its transport problem's , the so called "smart motorways" a fine example of doing little for the end user but a great revenue raiser
Its hard to look 10 years down the line & imagine what our roads will be like

What's so different about building the road down the river and building the road along side the river? Debate  The motorist get a fine view either way and it kills less trees. :P

No idea about local traffic regs, but those over takers in those pictures are looking for a head on one day.

The main debate for me would be installing hundreds of piles into the riverbed to create a stable foundation. Rather than digging down ~500mm to achieve the same thing on dry land.

I like how it boasts about drivers amazing views.....yet the concrete parapets appear to be at roof height for many vehicles....

As a construction planner, the Chinese are certainly showing the western world how things can be done:
