Chicago US - recommendations

Looks like I'm going to Chicago with the bf mid Sept to visit some family he has out there. Anyone have any recommendations of what to see/do out there? I've never been to the Windy City. Only have one week but would like to make the most of it.
 
Sears Tower or the Willis Tower as I think its now known. America's tallest Building.

Just down the street as I recall is Water Tower Place and a large multistory shopping mall... :thumbsup:
 
Centennial Park - and "The Bean".
When there a couple of years ago, we did a Segway tour. Great fun.
Also you can do an Architectural Tour up the river on a boat, we really enjoyed that, and you will learn a lot about the buildings and history of Chicago - highly recommended.
September will be a great time to visit.

I went to Chicago for a few days in February and had a fantastic time.
In Chicago you have to go to a Blues club. I went to Buddy Guy's Legends. Even though it was a quiet night the music and musicians were amazing.

Also the steaks are just the best!! I went to Gibsons Steak House which is a classic style steak house. I had a 24 oz porterhouse which was the steak I have ever had! . Also I've not been but David Burkes Primehouse is supposed to be great and a more modern establishment.

The Art Institute of Chicago is also something you can't miss. It was 27 dollars to get in but worth every cent. They have American Gothic and that famous Seurat painting French people having a nice Sunday afternoon by the lake :D

The old town is a nice place to wander around and the Hancock Tower which isn't quite as tall as the Sears has great views and a bar too!

Chicago is one of my favourite US cities... Agree on the Sears Tower (used to work in there :) ), well worth a visit

Would also recommend the blues bars, plus Giordano's pizza restaurant - check out the pizza pies, they are great.

Blues bars - check out Rosa's Lounge or Buddy Guy's Legends.... Both excellent

For bars, check out Bin36 or Blue Frog, usually a good crowd in either of those, and very friendly.

Oh, and if you're into sailing, get on the lake!
 
Thanks guys this is really helpful. Getting me excited already. I'm really impressed with the wealth of travel knowledge members of the forum have. I really get a lot from it and have altered trips to see things advised by members and never been disappointed :thumbsup:
 
The Willis Tower is a must :thumbsup:

Chicago is my favourite city, stunning.... and you must go and see this

Sear tower is great but it's just a tall building compared to buddy guys blues bar. 2 and 1 must dos for me
 
I've never been there yet either, but as a fan of blues music I would want to go to Buddy Guys's Legends club. The great man himself might be playing.
