Wasn't quite sure where to post this (and couldn't see it already with a quick search), but a brilliant service from Directgov, another tool against shady car dealings.

First off though,

From Monday 17th the new MOT cert will come in, A4 with any advisories recorded on it too so unscrupulous sellers can't loose it!

And from the good people themselves...

You can check if an MOT certificate is genuine or if a vehicle has failed an MOT test by doing an MOT check online. This will give you details about past tests. Find out what you need to get started.

By my reckoning,

Swiped from info, pics and links from above (see for full details), with links to the site - Directgov...

Yes - this is great. It's been around for a few years and when I've bought second hand cars I've taken my laptop with me. Quick search sat in my car using the paper copy of the MOT for ref. #'s and you get to see all the advisories, and previous fails and immediately haggle with the dealer.

Advisories on my Golf, laughable ... one year they are on, the next they have gone and I did not do anything to the car :)

Oh that's funny. I just found it useful on a car I purchased for my daughter (won it on ebay for a steal from a dealer) to see it had failed an MOT and a few advisories so got them all sorted before handing over any cash. The delaer seemed to have forgotten them before...lol

As with all sytems they ar not foolproof. Garages still can do a few 'manual' MOT's and mess around by going offline.
