Hi all,
Thought this might be useful for someone in the future...
I believe all non-M e85/E86 have interchangeable fans, so should be relevant to all owners without an S54.
My coolant fan failed (it still span, but very slowly and with a lot of resistance). I tried to tear it down to repair it, but didn't get too far, so gave up for now and looked for a replacement fan
My E86 N52 has this fan: 17427519704 - which is unique to the Z4, and therefore expensive.

I didn't want to spend £80+ for a second hand fan, so instead got one from an E90 instead for £25. It worked just fine! The parts numbers were different, but there was one non-BMW number that was consistent between both fans which gave me the confidence to try.
The only thing that was different was the plug, so I just cut the plug off my old fan, and soldered it to the new one (three wires - all the same colour, so impossible to get wrong).
A good saving, for the sake for soldering three wires, and crucially, lots more availablity in the future as E90s are everywhere compared to the Z4!

E86 fan part numbers:

I fitted it, tested it with INPA, and it span up to the 15%, 50% and 90% set points without any issues, so seems the control logic is the same too.
